Profound Autism: An Imperative Diagnosis https://lnkd.in/g_diT6yd Still early days for the concept of profound autism and importantly, how it's defined (including how one measures the many facets of IQ). The Lancet Commission (2021) and the CDC definition/prevalence study (2023) led the way and slowly research interest is building. DSM-5 'levels' and ICD-11 presentation 'combinations' were also seemingly designed to encompass something like profound autism too. Strangely enough, I see many parallels with the way that ME/CFS has been formulated and defined down the years. Where multiple, slightly different definitions have been put forward that have taken time to be tested and redefined. I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see more than one definition of profound autism eventually emerging.

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are vulnerable to a multiplicity of risk factors, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, and caregiver neglect. However, another risk factor—human trafficking—is not so often discussed. You can’t be autistic without a diagnosis. Sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? That’s because it is!! Controversial, but to me, Self-diagnosis is as valid as a medical diagnosis. 👊 You don't have to prove anything to anyone, and sadly, many people feel the need to get diagnosed so that they have “evidence” of their condition. That shouldn't be the case.
