Is Dubai the world’s newest basketball hub? #playbookmiddleeast It began in 2022 when rumors spread that the city of Dubai wanted to: 1. Become the main sponsor of the most competitive league outside of North America, the Euroleague. The offer was to become the main sponsor of the competition through Emirates Airlines, with a contract that would dwarf the 10 million Euros a year that the current leading partner, Turkish Airlines, brings in for the Euroleague. (That sponsorship deal ends in 2025.) 2. Host three consecutive editions of the league's Final Four. A city that has successfully branded itself as a travel destination, it is looking to attract sports fans following the movement of sports tourism across the GCC. 3. Create a basketball team that would compete in it. And that team was founded in January 2024…Dubai BC. And since its inception, the impact has been felt. ↓ The team has been admitted into the ABA Liga (Adriatic Basketball League), and the details of this deal are fascinating. Overall, Dubai will contribute at least €2,500,000 per season: • A fee of €1,700,000 per season. • Full coverage of accommodation expenses for all participating teams in the league, including referees and officials, amounting to €200,000 per season. • Complete coverage of all flight expenses for traveling teams and officials to and from Dubai for away games played in the Coca Cola arena, which cost approximately €600,000 per season. The deal will run for three seasons, starting with the 2024-25 season and ending after the 2026-27 season. This is a proper investment and commitment to the game, but it's unsurprising. It's part of a trend of basketball-centered investments that’s been solidified over the last few years in Dubai. Dubai BC is in talks with leaders of the Euroleague, and this admission will strengthen their bid for entry. What's next? Will we see an NBA game in the city? Leejam Sports, a Fortune 500 Arabia company, announced the opening of a new women's center in Jazan City, Saudi Arabia. The company said in a statement to the Saudi stock market (Tadawul) that the center is located on King Faisal Road, Al Safa neighborhood, in Jazan City. It will operate under the "Fitness Time - Ladies" brand and will also include high-quality sports equipment and the latest gym designs. It added that the financial impact of this opening will be reflected from the third quarter of 2024. The proposal includes: 1. Host cities such as Riyadh, Jeddah, Alkhobar, Abha, and NEOM, with new stadiums and eight in Riyadh alone. 2. Over 230,000 hotel rooms and 132 training venues across 15 cities. 3. Ten proposed FIFA Fan Festival sites, including King Salman Park in Riyadh and The Line marina in NEOM.
