What if the system that feeds the world was also a key to fighting climate change? There are many farmers around the world who have found innovative ways to farm with nature, reducing emissions, restoring soils and ecosystems, producing quality outputs, and increasing resilience. Last November, I had the opportunity to share how we at Indigo are helping farmers unlock this solution at scale with biogeochemistry, soil science, satellites, and machine learning to measure and and reward the "hard to see" benefits of sustainable farming. I'm excited to share the video of that talk today, but I share it with a caveat: in the 6 months since shooting and releasing this video, we're now at over 2x the volume of carbon credits delivered, and over 2x the amount of emissions and water impact delivered in supply chains. These aren't forecasts, these are done. And the numbers will keep getting bigger. https://lnkd.in/e3G3rsxk I want to give a huge thank you to TEDxBoston, John Werner, Caty Byerly Rezendes, Davey B, and Alison Sander for the opportunity, the coaching, and support. Thank you to all the current and former Indigo colleagues who have done the work that make this all real, especially Geoffrey von Maltzahn for the vote of confidence to tell the story, and a special shoutout to the folks who helped refine and craft this talk: Eric Sauter, Chris White, Chris Repetto, Caroline Ahn, Jason McVay #tedxboston #planetarystewardship #sustainableagriculure #regenerativeagriculture #MRV

🐂 🌱 Roots So Deep showcases hooves and soil as climate solution https://lnkd.in/ekrxAtby 🐝 🌿 Roots So Deep is one of the most important documentaries for a generation. It showcases compelling new data that demonstrates the enormous regenerative capacity of cattle in Adaptive Multi-Paddock (AMP) systems. 👩🌾 👨💼 🦋 Every person who works in food, farming or land use policy should stop what they're doing right now, and make time to watch Roots So Deep. Many thanks to the The Global Impact Investing Network for showcasing the role of managed forests in solving the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss at this years Impact Forum. At BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group we are proud of the work we are doing to support the global bioeconomy, protect and enhance #biodiversity, and address #climatechange.
At the recent GIIN Impact Forum, Charlotte Kaiser, TIG's Head of Impact Finance, delivered an inspiring Lightning Talk on how smart investments in natural capital can be both impactful and profitable. Charlotte explored how sustainable forestry plays a vital role in addressing climate change, supporting sustainable development, and conserving biodiversity. She shared powerful examples of collaborative efforts, including TIG's collaborations to drive innovation in the fight against climate change. By managing forests responsibly, we can not only store carbon and reduce emissions but also create economic opportunities for communities while protecting ecosystems. This talk is a reminder of the transformative potential of blending finance with sustainability to deliver measurable impact. On June 14th, Koen van Seijen, corien botman, and Antonella Ilaria Totaro will be hosting Peter Byck, the director of Roots So Deep (You Can See the Devil Down There), at Kino Rotterdam. It is an amazing opportunity to watch his great new documentary and connect with other incredible people working deeply in the regenerative space. "Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there)” is a documentary series all about inventive farmers and maverick scientists building a path to solving climate change with hooves, heart and soil. Can an underutilized way to graze cattle, that mimics the way bison once roamed the land, help get farmers out of debt, restore our depleted soils, rebuild wildlife habitat and draw down huge amounts of carbon? Cattle have been seen as eco-villains for a long time. What if they can help save us from catastrophic climate change? “Roots So Deep” is guided by director and wrangler of scientists Peter Byck as he meets farmers on both sides of the fence – the folks practicing an adaptive way to graze, and their neighbors set in their family’s generations-old method of doing things. Byck’s team of outcast scientists are measuring what’s happening on both sides of the fences – exploring if this adaptive grazing could help slow down climate change." https://lnkd.in/d-6FvAsb https://lnkd.in/dU4jBJMj #regenerativeagriculture #soilhealth

Exploring Agroecological Zones in Rungwe, Busokelo & Kyela! Our recent landscape analysis reveals distinct agroecological zones, with thriving agriculture in avocado, Irish potatoes, and pyrethrum in the highlands, while cocoa, rice, and palm trees dominate the lowlands. Understanding the landscape helps us plan for climate resilience.

Climate Resilience in Pastoral Farming Through Indigenous Knowledge In the face of climate change, pastoralist communities are turning to their ancestral wisdom - Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) - to adapt and thrive. TEK, accumulated over generations, offers invaluable insights: -Weather prediction through celestial observations -Strategic grazing land selection -Efficient water resource management Innovative applications of TEK are emerging: -Cultivating drought-resistant indigenous fodder plants -Reviving traditional water harvesting techniques -Challenges remain in preserving this knowledge, but collaborations between elders, youth, scientists, and policymakers are showing promising results. Key actions needed: ✍ Invest in intergenerational knowledge transfer ✍Document and validate TEK through research ✍Integrate TEK into climate adaptation policies ✍Protect intellectual property rights of pastoral communities By harnessing the power of TEK alongside modern science, we can build resilience and create a sustainable future for pastoralist communities. What role do you think TEK can play in addressing global climate challenges?
