Confession time: I treat my Spotify Wrapped like the ultimate year-end party invitation. The big reveal has always left me grinning as I rediscover old favorites, uncover hidden obsessions, and brag about those edgy tracks that barely anyone else has heard of. But this year, I’ll admit I left the “party” feeling a bit…underwhelmed. Instead of feeling like a handpicked playlist from a trusted friend who “just gets” me, it came off more like a rushed auto-generated mixtape. (Anyone else double-check if their top artist was actually their top artist? The timing, the packaging of it — it all seemed a bit... rushed?) But let’s be real—I’m still a certified Spotify superfan. I’m not here to dunk on the platform I’ve adored for years but instead, I’m here to imagine an even brighter future. What if super-users, emerging DJs, and self-proclaimed music curators like me could join forces with Spotify’s brilliant internal teams? Together, we could remix the formula and bring back that spark of genuine discovery, adding a layer of human curation that complements the algorithm’s speed and scale. I don’t have all the answers, but I’ve got a few potential ideas to explore. Let’s connect and explore new ways to make music discovery feel magical again, turning each Wrapped into a celebration that actually blows our minds — and maybe introduces us to a few songs we didn’t know we desperately needed. Spotify has guided my music journey, and I’d love to share that joy with new and emerging listeners as well! The joy — of discovering a new song and making it your month's hyper fixation — is truly unparallel. Here’s to reinventing the playlist party—one track, one playlist, and one Wrapped at a time. If any of this sounds interesting, reach out, and let’s chat! #spotify #spotifywrapped #AI #musicindustry #music

That peaceful lounge Spotify playlist you love? It's probably fake. I just finished reading this really good piece from Harper's Magazine [link in the comments] on what Spotify does behind the scenes to maximise profits at the expense of real musicians. They fill popular playlists with cheap background music made by ghost artists - and now more and more AI - and most users don't even notice. And yet again, it shows how tech companies that start with good ideas often end up betraying their values. Spotify (in theory) wanted to make music freely available to everyone. They aimed to help indie artists reach new audiences. Now they quietly push anonymous tracks onto mood playlists to save money on royalties. But isn't this just how good ol' capitalism works? Companies start small with noble goals. Then they grow big, IPO, and suddenly shareholders matter more than the product or the people who make it. We've seen this with Facebook, Amazon, and Google. They all claimed to make the world better. Now they'll do almost anything for profit. What bothers me with Spotify is how sneaky this all feels (at least that's what the article hints on). They don't tell users they're listening to cheap stock music. They don't tell artists they're being replaced by ghost tracks. They hide behind fake artist profiles and made-up bios. Then again, if users don't care who makes their background music, what stops Spotify from replacing all that category with AI-generated tracks? Real musicians already struggle to make money from streaming. Soon they might compete with algorithms for those precious playlist spots. Maybe we need to stop pretending tech companies care about anything except money. Or maybe we need better ways to keep them honest once they get powerful. But first.... we need to start paying attention. Read this article, it's really good. #innovation #ai #royalties #art #music #musicindustry

Spotify Wrapped: More Than Just a Playlist Spotify Wrapped is more than just a fun recap of your listening habits. It's a reflection of who you are, your experiences, and your connections. ‣ Self-Discovery: Your Wrapped list is a mirror to your soul, revealing your moods, passions, and growth throughout the year. ‣ Social Comparison: Sharing your list sparks conversations, connections, and even a bit of friendly competition. ‣ Community Building: Music brings people together, and Spotify Wrapped is a modern-day campfire around which we gather and share stories. Let's use this year's Wrapped as an opportunity to connect deeper with others. Don't just like their posts; start a conversation! On a personal note, my daughter has officially taken over my Spotify account. I'm now apparently a top 13% Taylor Swift fan. If anyone sees me singing "Anti-Hero," just pretend you didn't. 🙈 #NotMyMusic #DadLife #SpotifyWrapped #SelfReflection #SocialConnection

Did your Spotify Wrapped confuse you too? Do they have "too much data" to make sense of - sensibly? 🟢 2 of my top 5 songs were songs I didn't like at all - Spotify would just push them in my playlist, & I would skip them each time. How did those songs make it to the top? 🟢 My Google clock's alarm tone is a song that's played from Spotify - so Spotify thought it was my favourite song because I "played it everyday". Genius. 🟢 This year they also showed you the monthly phases of genres you listened to the most. I didn't relate to that list at all. Same with the top 5 artists. It felt like watching someone else's wrapped. Spotify Wrapped turned from "Here's what your year sounded like" to "Here's the music we pushed on your playlists" Their data may be factually true. But I couldn't relate to it emotionally anymore. 💡 It also tells me about how my music listening habits have drastically changed from the MP3 days. Now I choose lesser for myself, & let their algorithm choose for me. So I'd like to thank Spotify for this year's wrapped - I learnt something about myself - that I need to choose the music I listen to more often! Were you satisfied with this year's Spotify Wrapped? #spotify #spotifywrapped #wrapped2024 #UXdesign #data #algorithm #design #industrialdesign

As the workweek winds down, there's a sense of relief and excitement in the air. It's the perfect time to unwind, relax, and indulge in activities that bring us joy. So, let's embrace that "Friday feeling," turn up the volume, and let the music guide us into a weekend filled with relaxation and good vibes. 🎶✨ As we do, I’m also excited to share my latest analysis on streamed songs on Spotify for 2023! This analytical report highlights key trends, top-performing artists, and the relationship between song attributes—such as release year, mode, and number of artists—and their streaming performance. Insights are drawn from a comprehensive analysis of song data, including streams, chart rankings, and playlist presence. The goal? To uncover patterns that can inform music production strategies and platform recommendations. Here are some key insights from the analysis: 🎧 Most Streamed Song and Artist: The Weeknd emerged as the most-streamed artist, with Blinding Lights topping the charts. 🎶 Year with the Most Released Songs on Spotify: 2022 saw the highest number of songs released on the platform during the analyzed period. 🎵 Musical Scale (Major vs. Minor): The mode of a song significantly influences its emotional impact. Of the 947 songs analyzed, 545 were in a major key (often associated with uplifting, positive emotions), while the remaining 402 were in a minor key (linked with darker, more somber emotions). This balance reflects the emotional range that resonates with Spotify listeners. 🎼 Top Songs by Playlist Inclusion: Playlists play a pivotal role in song discovery. This analysis examined the top songs included in popular Spotify playlists, shedding light on user preferences and trends based on curated selections. 📊 Top Songs by Spotify Charts: Songs that perform well on the charts tend to reflect public interest and current music trends. Interestingly, three out of the top five chart-topping songs were in a major key, suggesting a preference for more positive, energetic music. 👩🎤 Relationship Between Number of Artists and Streams: The analysis revealed that songs performed by a single artist tend to have higher streaming numbers, followed by collaborations with two artists. This suggests that solo releases may resonate more with audiences and perform better in terms of streams. I’m excited to see how these insights can help shape future trends in music production and streaming strategies. Stay tuned for more projects! #datafam #visualization

It's that most wonderful time of the year... Your timelines and social media feeds are flooded with colourful graphics of people's Spotify Wrapped results over the past year. It's like a personal story of who we are through the music we listen to. Here's what I love about Spotify Wrapped: 1️⃣ It Connects You to Your Favourite Artists That one song you played 257 times? It’s proof of the emotional bond music creates. Seeing exactly how long you've listened to an artist or obsessively looped that one song feels like a badge of honour. 2️⃣ It Sparks Curiosity About Others Wrapped is not only about you. It sparks curiosity about others. Seeing others top artists and genres is a preview into their personalities and music tastes. Being surprised that a friend listens to a particular genre. Wrapped sparks thoughts and conversations like... 'You listen to so and so'? 'I need to start listening to'... 'What's the big hype about this artist?' 3️⃣ It Tells Your Story This isn't just about stats. It's a summary of your moods, memories and obsessions over the year. Remember that one song you had on repeat because you were going through a tough time? It's more than just music. 4️⃣ It's a Showcase and Celebration of Music We all look forward to it now. Elevating Spotify Wrapped is a tradition now. Spotify Wrapped transforms self-discovery into entertainment, turning your music tastes into something shareable and blurring the line between a playlist and your personality. I would share my results, but I use Apple Music... 😆 So here's a random stat. Has Spotify Wrapped changed the way we listen and look at music?
