It's disappointing how people see a group that clearly says voluntary participation, i.e zero pay, you join and then proceed to guilt tripping or smooth talking the group into getting paid. Volunteering involves using your 3Ts - Time, Talent and Treasure, if you can't afford it at the time, please, DO NOT VOLUNTEER, you will only frustrate others. Because they will keep begging you to do what you had promised. NOTE: Volunteering is not the Same as Internship Please. #volunteeropportunity #volunteering #volunteeringNOTinternship

Community Service & Volunteering! Is it really unpaid? In the world today, money is almost regarded as the highest form of value you can get from doing a job or fulfilling a task. But money is usually the least value we get from completing a job, because money is meant to be exchanged for other things with greater worth and value. For me, I believe the most value we get from doing a job, task or project is the knowledge we get, the relationships we build and the memories that lingers. As I continue my work with Nixerlex Youth Development Foundation, I realize more fully my own potentials and the joy I get from such service is enough value that money can’t offer. So perhaps the next time you have an opportunity to volunteer, serve others or just maybe an unpaid internship opportunity, I suggest you look forward to the intangible values that are worth more than money. #NYDF #NixerlexYouthDevelopmentFoundation #Volunteering #CommunityService

Unpaid volunteer work and internships (even though they shouldn't be) are suitable for university and college life. However, don't let yourself be exploited, especially if you're a girl. Women empowerment always starts with your own self, and without financial freedom, empowerment is somewhat hollow. In the name of volunteering, our youth is highly exploited. Be aware and learn to say no sometimes. Don't burden yourself. Be specific and selective. Once you graduate, your first goal should be to earn a stable income. Alongside that, volunteer as much as you can, but ensure you have a stable income so that you can pay your bills. Volunteering isn't bad, but the exploitation of your energy and potential is, especially when others benefit from your efforts and hustle. University, college, and school are times to build your portfolio. Participate in extracurricular activities, volunteer, and build your personality. Even in middle-class families, most students don't have the responsibility of paying their fees, so utilize this time to its full potential. Don't waste it. We should volunteer for our community at any stage of life selflessly, but when it comes to organizations, businesses, and agendas, question them! -Asma Tariq Educationist

From this session by Terry Otieno, one thing that stood out for me was the statement "Advocacy is persuasive and not confrontational". I learned that in advocacy, one has to integrate persuasion in crafting proper communication and advocacy plans that would yield results and gain the attention of the required stakeholders and policymakers. Your level of persuasion is directly proportional to the level of attention your advocacy goals and objectives would get👌. #publichealth #advocacy #communications
Our next internship training session on Advocacy Planning will be held this Saturday at 8:00 PM WAT. The session will be facilitated by Terry Otieno, an activist at the UN and the Global Focal Point in the Sendai Stakeholder Children and Youth Group. It promises to provide valuable insights into advocacy planning strategies, equipping our interns with the necessary skills to drive impactful change.

MSci Geography Student at the University of Birmingham | Researching the emotional impacts of climate activism | Peer-to-peer support as a Student Mentor
Over the past few months, I've had the honour of working in collaboration with the Brushstrokes Community Project as part of my Professional Placement module with the University of Birmingham. My research project aimed to investigate the “Impact of volunteering on wellbeing and integration into the community, focusing on those with lived experiences of migration.” In my report, I concluded that volunteering had had an overall positive impact on their collective wellbeing and sense of belonging, with their diverse backgrounds provide unique and irreplaceable insights into the lives of clients accessing Brushstrokes. Moreover, volunteering is viewed as essential to understanding local culture, and thus improving their employability prospects, enriching both their lives and the wider community. As such, I recommended the following: 🤝 Host dedicated social events for volunteers, to support their wellbeing and foster community connectivity. 👔 Offer specialised employability advice and skill development opportunities. 🗣 Promote advanced English-speaking courses for workplace-specific terminology and improve confidence. My experiences over this time have been invaluable and allowed me to develop my professional profile by diversifying my skillset, hosting a presentation in front of my peers, engage with and find practical solutions to current real-world issues, critically reflect on prospective careers and more. Thus success has been reliant on my initiative, dedication, flexibility, interpersonal skills, fostering respect and maintaining confidentiality throughout. #professionalplacement #researchreport #internship #careerdevelopment #volunteering #volunteersmakeadifference #wellbeingatwork

Meet BeJay, one of TJC’s Nutrition Advocacy Interns! 🤩 During her internship, she conducted research for our webinar on the intersection of homelessness and hunger. Here’s what she found out: ⭐️ Between 2019-2021, there was a 33% increase in homelessness across the US (Source: Hud Exchange) ⭐️ 25% of renters in the U.S. spend half or more of their income solely on housing. This financial burden leaves insufficient resources for essential needs such as food (Source: Hud Exchange). ⭐️ In Tennessee, over 10,500 individuals were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2022, ranking us with the 16th highest homeless rate in the nation (Source: 2022 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report by The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development). ⭐️ In 2023, Tennessee’s food insecurity rate was 17.5%, which is the third highest in the nation (Source: United States Census Bureau). Those are large stats! What’s a solution? 🤔 Safety net programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, can be extremely effective in supporting people facing homelessness. That said, individuals who are unhoused face significant barriers to accessing SNAP benefits, such as lack of transportation, technology, and government-issued identification documents. TJC advocates for ways to make the application process easier, so that everyone can gain access to the help they need. 💪🏛️ If you would like to learn more about this topic, visit tnjustice.org/trainings to watch the full “Housing Insecurity and Hunger” webinar recording! 💻 Also, if you are looking for an invaluable internship experience in the field of social justice and public health, visit tnjustice.org/careers! 💼 #TJCInterns #InternatTJC #InternshipOpportunities #NonprofitInternships
