The Stimulating Sustainable Entrepreneurial Thinking in Scientists #SSETS programme continues to be a game changer as lead Coach, Dr. Akanimo Odon continues to groom entrepreneurial academics. This week's learning session focused on being able to publicise my research outputs on social media and not just on academic journals, networking and ensuring my research interests fits into some, if not all of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs. #MyKeyLessonsOnSSETS thus far include: 1. Ensuring collaboration with researchers within and outside one's region. This helps to come up with solutions that are not region-specific, but can be applied across regions. 2. Also, ensuring that one carries out interdisciplinary studies with researchers outside one's field as this increases research scope, solves more problems, expands knowledge, increases relevance and puts one in a better position to win a grant. 3. The SDGs obviously stem from problems that need to be solved. As such, channelling one's research towards any these SDGs indicates relevance to not just one's profession but the world. 4. Teaching students with the industry in mind, and not just offering theoretical lessons. They should be able to solve real life issues with the knowledge they have acquired in class. 5. Career satisfaction can be achieved if one's talents/gifts/skills are integrated into one's daily career activities. Special thanks to our partners British Council Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Lancaster University National Universities Commission (NUC) Caleb University Lagos and Dr Viola Akhigbe Chinyere Ezeanya-Bakpa #BeforeAndAfterWithSSETS #SSETS

Indeed, universities must drive social innovation by broadening impact, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, and integrating critical thinking in education. Highlights from the introductory panel discussion at the ERUA-European Reform University Alliance 4th Annual Summit "Social Innovations for Transformative Society" by Katia Dupret #SOCIN24 #WeAreERUA #SocialInnovation #HigherEducation #Collaboration #CriticalThinking #SocietalImpact
Director of Centre for Social Sustainability / Democratic Leadership / Cross-sectoral partnership / social psychology / sustainability / employee well-being / board partner / former head of research and studies
What role should and can universities play in strengthening social innovation addressing societal challenges? 🌻learning from civil society expertise 🌻go beyond business and technology innovation - including the humanities and social sciences 🌻integrate critical thinking in education and competence development 🌻broadening our impact definitions 🌻nurture and facilitate cross disciplinary and cross sectoral collaboration This necessitates that universities: 💥redefine assessment metrics to include cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration 💥stop the competition on rankings based on criteria that are far away from indicating societal engagement and social innovation capabilities 💥include stakeholders as co-cocreators of societal relevance/impact indicators 💥structurally nurture and support teaching and competence development focusing on critical thinking. A provocative new article by Jenny Lee and Giorgio Marinoni in University World News reveals how 🇺🇸 the US stands out - for better or worse. Drawing from the International Association of Universities (IAU) 6th Global Survey Report, they highlight: 🇺🇸 US as an outlier: Unlike global peers, US institutions focus more on revenue than rankings in internationalization efforts. 🌍 Brain drain concerns: 40% of global universities fear brain drain, but only 4% of US institutions share this concern. 🎓 Student Recruitment Obsession: US institutions are 2x as likely to focus on international student recruitment compared to the global average. 🌱 Sustainability disconnect: Nearly half of US institutions report no explicit link between internationalization and sustainability initiatives, contrasting sharply with global trends. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e7Y6SvWS
🌎 🌏 🌍 University internationalisation is not a one-size outfit, comment Jenny Lee & Giorgio Marinoni in this UWN story. While universities throughout the world are advancing #internationalisation efforts, these efforts vary in importance, scope and activity. The authors highlight some differences as scholars, policy-makers and university staff seek to advance internationalisation, while also considering the diversity of internationalisation approaches. Recently, the International Association of Universities’ (IAU) 6th Global Survey Report on Internationalization of Higher Education: Current trends and future scenarios reported some broad global #trends, while noting regional variations. (📌 Find the full copy of that IAU report here: https://lnkd.in/gDiUphmM ) Most notably, the US is an outlier for reasons that have to do with the country’s global positioning and market-based financial model, with limited governmental appropriations for universities. As explained in the book, US Power in International Higher Education, internationalisation does not operate on a level playing field and #soft power shapes the direction and magnitude of university internationalisation activities. The IAU report confirms the dominance of the US’s role while also shedding further light on the ways US internationalisation operates in contrast to the rest of the world. 📌 Read the full story in UWN: https://lnkd.in/dJQa8S-F #highered #universities #TNE #intled #studyabroad #students #studentrecruitment Gerardo Blanco Hans (J.W.M.) de Wit Siro B. The recent QS Higher Ed Summit discussed the integration of sustainability and cultural diversity in #highereducation – topics that align closely with SARUA’s mission for #innovation and #sustainabledevelopment across the #SADC region. The focus on inclusive policies and preparing graduates for global challenges is a shared priority for institutions everywhere. We’re all striving toward the same goals, and by collaborating, we can create meaningful change in education for both local and global communities.

This is epic. I did research on the engineering sector in my MBA and the literature on my subject of study was very limited. My supervisor could also not get her head around the subject matter and gave me an unbelievable mark. The prize winning research was an economics research. This forces business school research to focus on specific already well-researched fields. We need to bridge the walls between faculties- in my current job I have to explain why finance people need to understand “where the money they manage is made”, understand the whole value chain for you to manage your scope. Explain why engineering people have to factor in economics, finance and politics including other things in their decision making and day to day activities. Disciplines work on the same thing but in silos. Prof needs to speak up more and we need to make him trend.

PhD DISRUPTION & INNOVATION: This article raises critically important issues that African universities who need more academic staff who have a PhD and need to produce - as the African Union has enjoined them to - 100 000 PhDs by 2034 to address. They also have to up their contribution to research and innovation to address pressing challenges and drive sustainable development. Professor Taylor makes very important points worth quoting verbatim: "One reason that many doctoral programmes do not adequately serve students is that they are overly specialized, with curricula fragmented and increasingly irrelevant to the world beyond academia. Expertise, is of course, essential to the advancement of knowledge and to society. But in far too many cases, specialization has to led to areas of research so narrow that they of interest only to other people working in the same fields, sub-fields, or sub-subfields. Nany researchers struggle to talk to colleagues in the same department, and communication across departments and disciplines can be impossible" The solution which I fully concur with: "If doctoral education is to remain viable in the twenty-first century, universities must tear down walls that separate fields, and establish programmes that nourish cross-disciplinary investigation and communication". To achieve this goal in Africa we will need - in abundance - credible visionary inspiring academic leaders - at all levels - of stature and well respected by academics and students. This cannot be done by impostors of low or no academic standing using administrative power and high office to intimidate, cower and frighten the university community. #impact #interdisciplinary #transdisciplinary #transformative #change
