I'm happy to share a recent open access publication in Materials Science & Engineering A - "Fatigue prediction through quantification of critical defects and crack growth behaviour in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V alloy". By using CT scans to examine 3D-printed titanium parts we can predict their service lifespan. We do this by analyzing defects inside the 3D-printed parts and measuring the materials resistance to crack growth. Simply put, if a defect is large enough, eventually microscopic cracks called fatigue cracks will form near the defect. Given enough time in service these fatigue cracks can grow large enough to cause the component to break. If we can predict the growth rate of fatigue cracks and accurately measure the size of preexisting internal defects, then we can predict when a 3D-printed part might fail. Our study found that heat-treated parts perform better because they resist crack growth more than as-printed parts. This research is vital for making stronger, more reliable 3D-printed components for aerospace and healthcare applications. Understanding how and why these parts fail helps us improve their durability and performance. The CiNet symposium was an amazing exploration of human adaptability. Highlights included the enhanced abilities of blind soccer players, showcasing brain plasticity, and the potential for physical improvement in the elderly with specific training. Dr. Shinichi Furuya’s work demonstrated how robotics hands and camera-based tracking are revolutionizing piano training, paralleled by Dr. Kashino's research in baseball. Professor Hajime Asama's discussion at the CiNet symposium extended the concept of adaptability beyond individuals to societal structures, likening societies to distributed autonomous systems with humans and robots as micro-units. This perspective was echoed in natural examples like crickets, ants, and bees, demonstrating how social interactions and environmental factors shape adaptations. This strengthened my understanding of adaptability as essential for human well-being, emphasizing its role in optimizing life within society and expanding our capabilities through learning and collaboration (and Sen(1985) says capability = wellbeing), closely linked to brain plasticity and prediction errors. From these, now I have several scientific inquiries. 1. The individual differences in adaptability: what makes some individuals more adaptable than others? 2. The neural correlates of adaptability, such as the role of dopamine levels in the basal ganglia and the level of neuroplasticity. 3. The multi-dimensional nature of adaptation raises the question of whether there's a specific dimension that is particularly crucial for our social existence as humans. It gave me amazing insights and further inquiries that would be crucial for my future research and innovations in neurotechnology. And I have further consolidated my belief that neurotechnology can push human limitations. Thank you to all the organizers and speakers for an amazing learning experience! I loved it.

I‘d like to thank the individuals who’ve been helping me so far on my journey of writing a new book. The book I’m writing is about human-centered business model design and innovation… designing innovative business models by explicitly applying the philosophies and practices of human-centered design.  It should be out before the end of this year. The book is divided into three sections.  The first explores the business model and business model innovation.  The second introduces human-centered design in the context of discovering an optimal solution to an unmet need.  The third expands this to using human-centered design to explore and design one’s entire business model in a human-centered way. I’m about 1/3 of the way through the manuscript – working on the last chapter of the first section.  There’s been a lot of research behind this, but also interviews with 18 incredibly insightful individuals – each of whom I would like to thank by name for helping me get to this point.
