Even though "one bad apple" may not, in this case, spoil them all, that thin blue wall of silence is alive and well, and it keeps many officers quiet about such bad behavior. We condone such "bad" behavior when we are quiet about it, and those we swore to serve and protect understand this silence. There is so much more here to talk about.

If there is a thin blue wall of silence, there is very little evidence of it in my experience or research. In fact, while the actions of a single officer may reflect poorly on an agency, we aren’t seeing the dynamic of one corrupt cop causing a culture crisis of rot. A huge factor in our current retention and recruiting crisis is the diminishing allure of the profession. When we describe the failure of an individual, we must not cast our faithful and virtuous troops in the same negative light. https://lnkd.in/e93q2dUe

WOW ... I love it when my training, my messages and my words make a positive difference and have a multiplying ripple effect beyond the original learning environment. What is your concept of the 'comfort zone'? Should we be in it or out of it and when should be OK to change states? Have you ever been told to 'come back to your comfort zone' or have you been told you should always be out of your comfort zone because that's where growth is? Kathie Spalding (post below) is rightly very proud of her little (but taller 😆) brother graduating to become one of our newest Police Officers. I'm very pleased to have another member of the Blue Family out there on the frontline and I have great respect for his perseverance to achieve his dream. It would seem it has taken him a lot of hard work and refocusing to achieve the goal but as Kathie describes, "he persevered and has shown incredible resilience through some tough times". Kathie then kindly references me in a quote, from one of my presentations on the Continuum of Human Durability, "If you crash and burn, come back to your comfort zone, that's when you start getting your confidence back." 'Come back to your comfort zone' is not something most people, and certainly corporate people, are used to hearing. Very quick overview: Being outside our comfort zone is great so long as we're not too far out or out of it for too long without seeing the rewards of our efforts. In these conditions, being outside the comfort zone becomes the negative stress zone and this can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression and worse if not managed. The first step in management 'can be' as easy as coming back to your comfort zone - just for a little while or as long as you need to refresh, re-energise, and refocus so you can then reengage. Inside our comfort zone is where there is no stress. It's where you can be 100% reliable. It's where you get your confidence and courage back and reengage with renewed vigour. Coming back to your comfort zone is not a copout, it's smart for those of us who sometimes push ourselves too hard for too long and notice that other parts of our lives - health, family, fitness, socialising etc. - are being negatively affected. If you want to know more about the strategies, follow me here or reach out and let's have a chat about Human Durability discussions for you or your company. Please feel free to tag someone or share this far and wide.
Very proud of my little brother who fulfilled his life ambition of becoming a police officer today as part of course 59 cadets. He took the long road, he persevered and has shown incredible resilience through some tough times, and in the words of someone very wise and incredibly resilient (Derrick McManus) "If you crash and burn, come back to your comfort zone, that's when you start getting your confidence back". Well done to all the new recruits!

This is a well-written article that just scratches the wave tops of the purvasive rot that permeates the military justice system. In full disclosure, I served with Jamie in the 3d SFG(A) CIF and know him on a professional and personal level. For those that have served with Jamie, the sting of this betrayal cuts incredibly deep. If I made a list of names that epitomize the ethos of the ‘Quiet Professional’, James Morris would be on it. Jamie has a sterling reputation as a man of all-weather character in addition to being a superb Green Beret and NCO. He makes my go-to-war roster every single time. Jamie and his wonderful wife Kim conducted themselves with dignity and poise throughout this ordeal. The loss of his service and this family to the Special Forces Regiment, at the hands of senior officers and enlisted in the Regiment, particularly those of 3d SFG(A), is an unnecessary and inexcusable tragedy. The perpetrators of this injustice are not faceless, remote strangers executing the institution’s will from a distance. They knew Jamie as well or better than anyone. They knew what they were doing was wrong and simply lacked the ethical foundation and/or the moral courage to act appropriately. There is no mechanism to hold individuals accountable for these ethical lapses. On the contrary, institutional leadership tends to reward and protect them. Even if the institution rewards you with promotions and opportunities for greater malfeasance for your repulsive service, you can never escape the coward in the mirror which reflects the same image we all hold of you. #LeeStrong #JasonJohnston #franbeaudette #bradmoses Jamie does not nor will ever have that problem. #jamesmorris #juliegolsteyn #petehegseth #danlamonthe #toddsouth #philstackhouse #reneestackhouse #ninahilner #mattforst #jeffreyaddacott #fredgalvin #kevinriley #ajkibby #joshladd #mattcoburn #scottmann #anthonytata #scottmiller

FSCA stands firm: Steinhoff investigation continues despite Markus Jooste’s tragic end. The death of Markus Jooste will not affect the FSCA’s investigation relating to Steinhoff, the Authority said on Friday. “The investigation will continue, as there are other investigated parties involved. The Authority will also continue to assist the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with any investigations they may have under way,” the FSCA said in a statement. KingMilitaryLaw.com Experienced Trial Attorney, Retired Military Judge, Proud Parent of a Marine, Working Hard to Bring Aggressive Legal Representation to Military Members, Veterans, and their Families
We've entered a new dimension for military justice. Many of us are hopeful that the new OSTCs, and the good men and women who will perform its missions, will bring much-needed relief to servicemembers who face lifelong, terrible obstacles from facing criminal trials for crimes that lack evidence to achieve a conviction. The next step is for the OSTC's to mandate that their prosecutors adopt and abide by the ABA and DOJ prosecutorial standards, which require heightened candor, prompt processing of cases, and, most lacking now, that servicemembers will not face trial unless: "admissible evidence will be sufficient to support conviction beyond a reasonable doubt, and that the decision to charge is in the interests of justice." Such a step will greatly improve our current standardless system. So, with high hopes and bated breath, I wish the men and women of the OSTC's luck as they step into this new dimension and (hopefully) work hard to make the system as fair as it should be.
