It's Spring Equinox! Today the light and the dark of the day are equal, and in the northern hemisphere, this time is often a time when people plant new seeds to harvest later. Spring has always been my favorite time of year. In Texas where I grew up, it's wildflower season, and the roadsides are covered with dots of vibrant color that look like something George Seurat would paint. It's Rodeo season and you can go see animals be born into the world. Birds are emerging from nests as they break through their eggs. The world feels like it is teeming with life after the quiet of winter. As we enter this spring, I'm thinking about what I want to plant to bring to the world. I'm hoping I can continue to find people who want to transform their workplaces. I believe we can change how people work together. I believe its possible to create workplaces where everyone can thrive. I believe we can unlearn ways of managing and leading that are dominating and controlling. I believe we can learn to lead and manage in liberatory ways. I know breaking with traditional ways of working isn't for every organization but I hope the people who do want to do this work can find each other. Horses are powerful creatures and really don't have reason to be afraid in most situations... but they do get spooked! 𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐬? We ARE experts... we have put in the "time"... let's take inventory: We've trained new hires... We've trained our boss... We've streamlined processes... We've saved the company $$$... I THINK MR GRINCH MAY HAVE HAD A POINT ... “Maybe Christmas (he thought) doesn’t come from a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” The Grinch. At this time of the year it shouldn't be all about the rush of customers or the sound of the tills ringing. It should be about feeling and being part of something more. You can only imagine my delight, following a suggestion to our teams to have some fun on our Facebook platform throughout the Christmas period, I saw this incredibly creative (and utterly hilarious) post from our Ulverston store. Working collaboratively to not only engage followers on our social media, by giving them a snapshot into who we are as people, but using imagination and flair to have bags of fun. We often forget how much of an impact having fun at work has. Having fun leads to happier teams. Happier team members are more engaged. Engaged employees show increased rates of productivity as well as a far lower rate of absenteeism from work. Key metics that we are all predominantly focused on as a business and yet how often do we prioritize fun? For retail workers it can be one of the most stressful and pressured times of the year. Now, i'm not advocating dressing up as the Grinch for work tomorrow but perhaps let's try and have a laugh with our colleagues and enjoy the time we spend in each other's company. During our lifetime we spend around 90,000 hours doing our jobs. That's a really long time so we may as well enjoy ourselves doing it, right?
