In the future, NATO member states will increase their interoperability to confront space-based threats. New technical standards and exercises will extend the alliance’s collective security framework into new domains.

Quantum technology in security and defense is identified as a key emerging technology whose potential applications can allow it to expand its capabilities. These technologies are getting closer to revolutionizing the world of innovation and could change the rules of security, including modern warfare. For any new innovative technology, it is necessary to set the right strategic approach. The NATO Quantum Strategy is the first strategic document approved by the NATO Foreign Ministers, as in January 2024. NATO published a summary of the document. The strategy outlines how quantum can be applied to defense and security, and helps promote and guide NATO‘s collaboration with industry to develop a transatlantic quantum technology ecosystem. Quantum technology is one of the technology areas that NATO Allies prioritize, and it is therefore necessary for all countries to develop a clear approach to development and deployment. #quantumcomputing #quantumcryptography #quantumsecurity 

🖥 Digital interoperability! Interoperability is the cornerstone of NATO. For 25 years, NATO Allies and partners have gathered at the Coalition Warrior Interoperability eXercise (#CWIX), #NATO's largest interoperability exercise, to test the technology and standards needed to exchange and share information across all domains. This exercise is essential to NATO's future as an MDO-enabled Alliance, fueled by #DigitalTransformation. We, as MilSOFT, have proudly supported the #CWIX for over 15 years. The United States Department of Defense's FutureG office is implementing and testing 5G capabilities for military operations. The FutureG office, transferred to the DOD Chief Information Office in 2023, is working to expand research and testing of 5G and future-generation wireless network technologies. They are conducting live experiments to understand the real-world limitations and challenges of these radio systems. The office has multiple projects underway, including improving surveillance at bases in Africa by upgrading towers with 5G capabilities, and a multinational 5G experiment with NATO partners in Latvia to test the technology for military applications. Integrating 5G into military operations can provide benefits like higher data rates, resolution, and frame rates for surveillance, as well as enable interoperability for initiatives like Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2). Year after year, NATO's top experts gather at #CWIX to explore, experiment, examine, and exercise interoperability capabilities. Today marks the 25th time that #NATO's top interoperability exercise has kicked off, with over 2,500 participants testing more than 490 capabilities. #Interoperability and #readiness are crucial to the success of the Alliance, allowing national forces to deploy together, communicate effectively, and be effective from the start of an operation. The ever-expanding NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) CWIX is getting the NATO Alliance closer to Day Zero interoperability with every iteration.

"NATO is helping finance a project aimed at finding ways to keep the internet running should subsea cables shuttling civilian and military communications across European waters come under attack." "The initiative, which has not yet been publicly announced, comes amid intensifying fears that Russia or China could mine, sever or otherwise tamper with undersea cables in an attempt to disrupt communications during a military crisis." "Data carried through cables under the sea account for roughly US$10 trillion worth of financial transactions every day, and nearly all of NATO internet traffic travels through them, according to the treaty organisation." NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT) provides direction and management to the #CWIX #testing programme, while NATO and Partner Nations sponsor #interoperability capabilities with #specific objectives defined by Allied Command Transformation and National Leads. CWIX focuses primarily on #testing and improving the interoperability of NATO and #NationalCommand, #Control, #Communications, #Computers and #Intelligence systems, with particular emphasis on those that would be #deployed within the NATO ✯✯✯#AlliedResponseForce. The exercise supports the development of #MultiDomain Operations and Digital Transformation by focusing on standards and #specifications; #tests the #exchange and #fusion of #information and #data across all domains, focusing on #datacentricity; #derisks interoperability to provide #Command and #Control for current #missions; designs interoperability into near-fielded and #emerging systems; and continues to $#experiment with #spaceinformation and how it can be #exchanged and fused.
