This incident is a perfect example of why Law Enforcement must be involved in the response to subjects threatening any form of suicide or who are dealing with mental health conditions that are causing them to act erratically or in any way threatening. A man carrying two knives is shot and justifiably killed by #PoliceOfficers when he disobeys the Officers orders and then charges an unarmed man. However, members of of the nearby “homeless encampment community” the criminals family claim the Officers unjustly killed him because the Officers were out of state Officers assigned to assist with Republican National Convention and should have never been there and that their presence causes the criminal to behave in the manner that he did. Then a group of protestors/activist show up to put on a show against the Officers actions. This is what is wrong with the world today, criminals are viewed as victims and the Police are viewed as the enemy. Members of homeless encampments which are often extremely disorderly, chaotic, lawless, and cause problems for the surrounding neighborhoods are considered a “community” with special “rights.” People believe that Police should only perform the tasks they are assigned to an nothing else. The belief that everyone and every incident can be deescalated and force should never be used. Simply put, there are a lot of fools out there. A #Cop is a Cop no matter where they are. These #Officers took immediate, effective, proper, lawful and justified action to end a deadly threat from an armed and dangerous man. Their actions saved the life of an unarmed person. The only person who is at fault for this #criminals death is the criminal. How many more Law Enforcement Officers must be physically attacked, shot at, shot or killed before action is taken to end this “War On Cops?” How many Officers need to be driven from the profession due to injuries from attacks or from the constant barrage of hatred aimed at them? How many Officers must die and how many folded flags must be handed to their widows, widowers, children, or parents before we get serious about defending our Officers against the lies of activists and certain politicians who fuel distrust and hatred against Officers? When will we take on criminals and crime head on while fighting to fix the Criminal Justice System that has been shattered over the last several years? At no time in the last 60 years has the Law Enforcement Profession needed stronger and more committed leaders then now who are willing to speak the truth the the political powers and the community, build relationships of trust and respect with the law abiding and true members of their communities, properly-recruit-train-develop-retain Officers, develop and implement proactive crime fighting strategies, and push District Attorney’s for prosecutions and convictions and Judges for proper sentencing. Law Enforcement Leaders encouraging de-policing by not engaging in traffic enforcement or quality of life criminal violations in order to make a small segment of society happy or putting on more “Cookies with Rookies” events will not fix this. For the mainstream media, including many feckless politicians (on both sides of the aisle) who are desperate for the attention garnered by headlines calling for the “dismantling” of the FBI, I’d challenge any informed, rational person who is genuinely concerned about protecting the American people from violent crime (not to mention national security threats) to answer the question: “…and then what?” This article is another example of the unrivaled ability of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to cooperate and coordinate the efforts of our collective resources at the Federal, State, local, and international levels. This sort of work has been going on for decades and is truly a “testament to the power of partnership and our tireless commitment to safeguard and curb violence in our communities." No other agency in the world comes close to the ability of the FBI to leverage resources, built upon decades of personal, professional, and institutional relationships at every level of law enforcement. Certainly the agency is going through a very difficult time and is rightly being criticized for failing to live up to its responsibilities to play by the rules in several high profile instances. Those involved should be held accountable and punished accordingly, commensurate with the seriousness of their actions and the damage done to the American people….However- the calls to defund the FBI are shortsighted, disingenuous, and irresponsible. We need to repair and restore - not devalue and destroy- this institution which has served as a bulwark against crime and corruption for over 100 years. This country needs the FBI - I’d argue that, now more than ever.

Much of the media is celebrating the decrease in officers who have died in the line of duty in 2023. However, a closer look at the data shows a 14% increase in the number of officers shot in the line of duty, which is a staggering 378 officers. This increase highlights the growing trend of violent engagement on law enforcement, which I have been warning about for some time. As a society, we need to recognize that the "defund the police" movement and rhetoric have had a significant impact on the way some members of the community engage with law enforcement. It is concerning that no other profession has been scrutinized as much as law enforcement. This, coupled with the dangers of the job, is leading to recruiting problems. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund today reported that 136 officers in the U.S. died in the line of duty in 2023. That is the solemn and bad news. It was encouraging to see, though, that this number is 39% lower than the 224 officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in 2022. Gunfire was the number one cause of death among officers (47), followed by job-related illnesses (40), and traffic-related incidents (37).
