Last Friday, I had the privilege of delivering a #keynote address at the Honors Completion Ceremony at Johnson County Community College. Confidently speaking to an auditorium full of people is something my freshman self would have never imagined doing. I took Public Speaking Honors at JCCC the fall semester of my freshman year. I remember being overcome with stage fright whenever I delivered my speeches—heart pounding, entire body trembling, mind going blank—to think the class was just on Zoom. So how did I overcome my stage fright? By engaging in public speaking so much that I got used to it and even enjoy it! While speaking at conferences and other public events is the most obvious way to get exposure to public speaking, here are some other activities I’ve been involved in that have given me a wide variety of speaking experiences: 💡Leading student organizations: chairing committee meetings, sitting on or facilitating panel discussions 🏫Working as a student ambassador: giving campus tours, presenting about what the school/program has to offer, talking one-on-one with prospective students 👩🏻🏫Taking classes that involve public speaking: presenting subject material in a structured manner 📚Tutoring: presenting subject material in an interactive manner #publicspeaking #stagefright #speech

When it comes to being a communicator, there is a fine line between being self-aware and self-conscious. After emceeing my company's townhall, I was asked by some colleagues on what are some things I've learnt about public speaking, training and doing workshops. This thought came to my mind, and I pondered on it a little bit more and came up with 4 points.
