Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to global public health. The UK government has recently announced a new action plan to combat AMR, which includes support for industries to develop new treatments. I believe that a similar action plan is needed in India. AMR is a major problem in India, and it is essential that we take steps to address it. The Indian government should provide support to industries for the development of new treatments and diagnostics for AMR. This could include financial incentives, such as tax breaks or grants, as well as regulatory support, such as fast-tracking the approval process for new drugs/diagnostics. Organisations like Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) are already doing it, but more is needed. The government and industries should also work to raise awareness of AMR among the public and healthcare professionals. This could be done through public health campaigns and educational programs. #publichealth #amr #policy Module Innovations

#AntimicrobialResistance can develop with remarkable speed. In 2019, 1.27 million deaths globally were caused by infections resistant to antibiotics.    The UK Government has announced a new 5-year national action plan to combat this silent pandemic, a global issue that makes infections difficult or impossible to treat. The plan will build on progress towards the UK’s 20-year vision for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which will see AMR contained, controlled and mitigated.    In 2022, the UK invested £210 million to partner with countries across Asia and Africa to tackle AMR through the Fleming Fund. 

Really pleasing to see the Confronting antimicrobial resistance 2024 to 2029 plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance published by the Department of Health and Social Care yesterday. Outcome 1 of theme 1 advocates a focus on infection prevention and control and infection management. Commitment 1.1 ‘Informed interventions’ states ‘we will continue to improve IPC and biosecurity practices that are informed by the latest evidence base and social sciences to minimise the potential for infection transmission, including outbreaks, optimise the management of infections and reduce the need for antimicrobial exposure.’ We couldn’t agree more! The Proxximos digital contact tracing solution is designed to provide evidence based reduction in infection transmission. 

We welcome the National Action Plan for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) launched today by the Department of Health and Social Care. AMR is a large, complex problem that can’t be tackled by solely developing more antibiotics. Which is why through our continued investments we’re committed to supporting research across disciplines that looks at all aspects of the problem – from human behaviour and how we grow crops and rear animals for consumption, to how we manage the environment or use technology, clinical management strategies or challenge established cultural norms. This new national action plan will ensure the UK better restricts its use of antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals – in both humans and animals – identify drug resistant infections before they emerge, and support industry in developing the next generation of treatments. As the second United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) kicks off today, it is good to see the role of diagnostics and laboratory services recognised and included explicitly in the Political Declaration to be ratified at this meeting. Paragraph 53 of this document doffs a cap to the One Health approach and the association between quality testing and appropriate, prudent and responsible antimicrobial interventions. We will be keeping a keen eye out for how this link between testing and treatment translates into real-world practice in the coming months and years.
