This panel discussion was incredibly insightful! Investing in rent or mortgage payments, rather than moving families into shelters, is often a more effective and less disruptive approach. Keeping families in their homes helps maintain stability, allowing children to continue attending their schools and preserving their sense of normalcy. This approach not only supports the immediate needs of the families but also contributes to their long-term well-being. #marysplace

Moral injury as a cause of burnout is seldom discussed. This is the psychological harm to healthcare providers when their values of compassion are transgressed by being unable to help a patient adequately. This is particularly evident when caring for patients who experience homelessness. In her recent research in California, homelessness researcher and medical doctor Margot Kushel MD shares her findings and the evidence-based policy opportunities to combat this moral injury and the greater political failure. Two points stood out to me: ⚡First is the framing; "Homelessness is an experience that people have, not a statement of who they are.” ⚡Next, recognition that homelessness occurs in conjunction with structural conditions that produce and reproduce inequalities. ⚡Third - we already have an evidence-based and effective approach... ⚡And finally, how healthcare professionals have a key role in solving this issue. Listen to more below ⬇️⬇️
🏠What is the evidenced-based way to end homelessness? Join me as I speak with Margot Kushel MD of the University of California, San Francisco and UCSF Benioff Homelessness & Housing Initiative as we discuss: 💡Moral Injury as a driver of burnout. 💡Harmful myths around homelessness. 💡Helpful frames to understand the issue. 💡Key policy insights from her research. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, Dr Kushel taught me so much about homelessness but also compassion and courage. Research we commissioned from Northumbria University suggests that 94% of people experiencing homelessness have experienced trauma. We must do more to tackle trauma if we hope to end homelessness. We need a nationwide trauma-informed approach within all homelessness services. And that starts with the government. That’s why, today, we are asking you to write to either the minister or shadow minister responsible for tackling homelessness to bring attention to this issue. Check out our new blog post: "As we observe World Homelessness Day, it’s crucial to remember that homelessness is NOT a one-size-fits-all issue. By recognizing the Continuum of Homelessness and the various challenges people face, we can foster greater empathy and awareness within our communities and ultimately build better solutions."
