Accessible Information Specialist. Doctoral student. Passionate about accessible information. 35+ years lived experience of disability.
Inspiration porn makes me incredibly uncomfortable. We have disabilities, we do not need kudos just because we didn’t shrivel up and die. Instead of praising us for living try: - employing us - paying us properly - providing an accessible workplace - not talking down to us - not using our disabilities to promote yourself as inclusive - not using our successes to promote yourself full stop - not undermining us because we do it better - providing access to growth and promotion. Don’t praise us for overcoming barriers - stop erecting the barriers and remove any so there is nothing for us to overcome.
On social media or TV, you probably have seen stories of a disabled person being celebrated at their High School prom, or being named an honorary member of their Football team. While these stories may seem harmless on the surface, these stories fall under the trope of “inspiration p*rn.” Learn more about this trope and why it’s harmful in this piece by RespectAbility Fellows Lydia Moro and Melissa Tessaro: https://lnkd.in/gg4W-Y7C

Celebrating California's "healing arts" professionals today! As a newly licensed LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor), I'm celebrating this exciting new stage in a long journey. It took more years than expected, mostly due to COVID. But here's the joy: I did not stop doing face-to-face sessions one day during the pandemic (although we created some uplifting face masks!). Our mission is to serve "wounded warriors", every branch, every war/peacetime era, every service-related injury, and more. How are you helping our veterans and active-duty wounded heal?

Use your voice to protect the arts! Next week, the FY’25 House Interior Appropriations bill will be going to the House floor for consideration. This bill currently appropriates $203.895 million each to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) – this represents a 1.5 percent cut below current funding levels. Two drastic amendments will be offered on the House floor next week by freshman Freedom Caucus member Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK). His amendments would further cut NEA and NEH by an additional $48 million each – cutting budgets by over 23%! A House floor vote on these amendments is likely to happen the week of July 22nd. Please write to your Representative urging him/her to VOTE NO on the Rep. Brecheen floor amendments to prevent further cuts to the NEA and NEH. https://lnkd.in/gqTNZX3B
