In November we awarded a further 13 projects with funding of up to £10,000. Which means we have now awarded 48 projects in total as we move in to round 9 and the start of 2025. Projects range from new product research in to flavoured butters, to the use of drone technology in biodiversity and the creation of innovative digital dairy STEM educational activities. We are proud of the wide ranging research we are able to fund through our project and look forward to seeing the results of these novel ideas and challenges. The latest issue of Pursuit, the University of Oregon’s research and innovation newsletter, is out now! An exciting scientific breakthrough explained in layman's language: How protecting peat swamps can lock up more carbon, and how this carbon can be accurately calculated to underpin the trading of carbon credit by protecting the peat swamps. This piece of news is particularly relevant to the region, as the research was done primarily in Brunei by the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research & Technology led by Charles Harvey, Alex Cobb, with the support of government agencies and scientific colleagues in Brunei. Highlighting indigenous knowledge in Greenland: an essential mission Indigenous knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, is a priceless treasure. In Greenland, Inuit communities share a vision of the world that is deeply connected to their environment, shaped by centuries of harmonious cohabitation with nature. This knowledge, known in Kalaallisut as ‘Siulitsinniit kingornutavut’ (heritage of our ancestors), goes far beyond survival techniques. It encompasses values, stories, resilience in the face of climatic challenges and a detailed understanding of polar ecosystems. At SEDNA, one of our fundamental objectives is to develop and promote this knowledge among the general public and the scientific community. Why do we do this? Because we are convinced that it can lead us to re-evaluate our own vision of the world. The Inuit don't just observe nature: they listen to it, interpret it, and adapt their practices according to its cycles. Their traditional knowledge, combined with modern scientific advances, paves the way for innovative solutions to global climate and environmental challenges. By highlighting their vision of the world, we are not only paying tribute to their heritage; we are inviting each and every one of us to broaden our perspective and reflect on our own place in the fragile balance of our planet. Together, by combining science and traditional knowledge, we can build a sustainable future.

We are excited to unveil a new suite of projects from our 2023 Request for Proposals, aimed at integrating Indigenous Knowledge into ocean and coastal decision-making. Historically, the traditional knowledge of Indigenous Peoples has been overlooked, impeding effective conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. These projects seek to bridge this gap, focusing on the identification, analysis, and communication of Indigenous Knowledge where culturally appropriate. By fostering innovative engagement approaches, we aim to enhance marine ecosystem management through a collaborative and respectful inclusion of Indigenous traditions and wisdom. https://lnkd.in/g3Amde72

💭Why is co-design in ocean research essential to stimulate action for the ocean and people?🌊   With the intention of linking research and sustainable development, an increasing number of funding programmes and global initiatives such as the UN Ocean Decade are supporting transformative processes and placing emphasis on the elements of co-design.   Co-design - an “iterative and collaborative process involving diverse types of expertise, knowledge and actors to produce context-specific knowledge” (Norström et al. 2020:183) distinctly emerged as the most prominent success factor of MeerWissen. A month ago, I had the honour of delivering a keynote at the 39th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Limnology (DGL), hosted by the Institute of Hydrobiology at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. The DGL is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! My talk, titled "Non-perennial Rivers in South Africa: Unpredictable, Highly Variable, and Often Misunderstood," explored some of the distinguishing characteristics of non-perennial rivers as well as challenges in assessing the ecological integrity and environmental water requirements of these rivers. As climate change progresses, its impact on river flow is likely to increase with some perennial rivers experiencing intermittent flow, shifting their regimes towards the episodic end of the hydrological continuum. By drawing on existing knowledge of non-perennial rivers, we can better guide river flow management in the future.
