Very excited and honored to have been invited to be a part of this newly published article exploring social work education in the U.S. during the current political atmosphere around abortion rights and bodily autonomy. We tried to represent the feedback of the social work students, while upholding that protecting abortion rights and bodily autonomy for all is a critical mission of social work. See abstract and link below, if you want to access the article and cannot through your institution, please let me know. Article abstract: On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, overturning 50 years of protected abortion rights in the United States. The decision directly impacts the way social work educators address current social issues that relate to bodily autonomy and social justice. This paper used mixed methodology to collect quantitative and qualitative survey data from MSW students to explore how they perceive the overturning of Roe v. Wade, how the topic was covered in their social work courses, and receive recommendations on how it should be taught. Constructivist Grounded Theory and Thematic Analysis were used to code for reoccurring and emergent themes. Findings indicate that students believe the Dobbs decision was not discussed enough in social work courses, that students believe reproductive justice discussions should be grounded in NASW values, and that students view the Dobbs decision negatively. Student suggestions for teaching reproductive justice are to focus on educational information, try to avoid politics, and set a civil classroom tone. The aim of this research study is to elevate the voices of students as educators grapple with navigating how the Dobbs decision impacts micro- and macro-level curriculum. https://lnkd.in/d-qNYphf

There is no such thing as a single-issue struggle because we do not live single-issue lives. Audre Lorde said those words and SisterSong highlights them in their education on reproductive justice. Reproductive justice affects us all, so this #womenshistorymonth I am posting the ABCs of women's health and highlighting the importance of intersectionality in our understanding of "women's issues." Women are people, and women's issues are societal issues. We must confront the constant attack on women's health, as well as the historical and present-day underfunding and undervaluing of "women's issues" as a collective across genders, sexual orientations, classes, races, abilities, and more. Because until we are all free none of us will truly be free. So join me in deepening the discussion and learning ways to take action by: 🔔 Following me and the rest of the ABCs 🏷️ Tagging someone advancing women's health 📕 & As a bonus for this topic, I have some homework to assign. Pickup Radical Reproductive Justice by Loretta Ross if you haven't already (or give it another read) I promise you'll learn something new or unlearn something old (and problematic). Today the letter is R: SisterSong defines Reproductive Justice as the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities. To achieve this we must: ↳Analyze power systems. ↳Address intersecting oppressions ↳Center the most marginalized. ↳Join together across issues and identities. Areas that are not often considered a reproductive justice concern but are: ↳Gun control ↳Climate change ↳Transport and urban planning ↳Career advancement ↳Mass incarceration 🗣️Let me know a topic you think of in the comments! --- #healthcareonlinkedin #nursesonlinkedin #womenshealth #intersectionality #reproductivejustice

When discussing human rights and reproductive justice, it's about empowering individuals with options. As Loretta J Ross said, “A person can’t fight for their human rights if they don’t know they have them. They got to know they have options beyond the deadly and dangerous ones.” Reproductive justice means being free to make informed choices about our bodies without discrimination, coercion, or violence. It's a fundamental aspect of our right to life, health, privacy, and education. Woodhull continues the fight for reproductive justice, a fundamental human right. When we have reproductive justice, we have reproductive freedom. #reproductivefreedom #reproductiverights #reproductivejustice #equalrights #humanrights #sexualfreedom #freedomtochoose #freeexpression

Americans are migrating. It isn't quite as dramatic or visible as the gold rush or the great migration north but it is happening. People are moving because of climate change, housing costs and, importantly, state policies. And, reproductive rights are one of the major drivers for movement. Who is most impacted? - Graduating high school students selecting colleges in states where they are guaranteed to get care - College graduates deciding where to launch their careers - People who want to have children and want access to the full array of reproductive services and care - People who don't want to have children and want access to contraception and abortions At MoveIndigo, we help all of these people identify the places where women's reproductive rights are assured. AND, we point them to the specific locations where they can also help protect these rights for others - in states and districts where their votes will have a supercharged impact on elections and policy-making. Check out our starter list of places to go if reproductive care is important to you. https://lnkd.in/empJaD5h #reproductiverights #reproductivehealth #abortionrights

What is the most politically hated state in the U.S.? Dive into the most politically polarizing states in the US. California, often criticized by conservatives for its progressive policies and high taxes, stands as a liberal stronghold. Texas, with its conservative policies and low taxes, is frequently a target of liberal disapproval. Florida, a battleground state, sparks national debates over voting rights and education policies. New York, similar to California, is seen as a liberal bastion with high taxes and progressive stances. Alabama, known for its conservative social policies, polarizes opinions around civil rights and reproductive rights. These states epitomize the nation’s political divide, making them frequent subjects of contention. #funfacts #travel #PoliticalPolarization #USPolitics #California #Texas #Florida #NewYork #Alabama #RedStates #BlueStates #PoliticalDebate #Election2024 #PoliticalScience #ControversialTopics #InstagramPolitics #PoliticalDiscussion

I am thrilled to announce my acceptance into the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Class of 2024! Founded by President Bill Clinton in 2007, CGI U is a vibrant community of students dedicated to addressing the most pressing challenges facing our campuses, communities, and the world. Over the years, more than 12,500 students have made a significant impact across 160 countries and all 50 states, supported by over $4.8 million in funding from CGI U's corporate and university partners. As part of CGI U's year-round program, I am focusing on an initiative called EmpowerHER. This comprehensive initiative tackles the urgent problem of restricted availability of reproductive healthcare and education, especially in underprivileged areas impacted by restrictive laws and insufficient resources. EmpowerHER seeks to enhance the agency and self-determination of women by providing them with comprehensive information, essential resources, and necessary assistance to make well-informed choices about their reproductive health. EmpowerHER focuses on places where women encounter significant obstacles in obtaining comprehensive reproductive healthcare and education, particularly low-income individuals, women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those residing in rural or neglected locations. The initiative aims to provide an easily accessible online platform for reproductive health information, resources, and support services. Additionally, it will coordinate seminars and educational initiatives in partnership with community organizations, schools, and healthcare providers to offer inclusive sexual education. The project also undertakes legal advocacy initiatives to promote laws that protect and enhance women's reproductive rights and create peer support networks and mentoring programs. EmpowerHER's unique approach combines digital technology, community engagement, and legal advocacy to empower women and foster fairness and independence in reproductive health choices. I am excited to make a meaningful difference through this incredible opportunity and look forward to collaborating with fellow students, alumni, and influential voices. #CGIU2024 #CommitmentToAction #ImpactLeadership
