After years of working in the IT- and toy industry, Stefanos Papamichailidis and Pontus Albinzon's entrepreneurial spirit led them to embark on a new journey. “We realised that there was a lack of an innovative offer for preschools in terms of sustainable educational materials. A gap we wanted to fill.” They have since dedicated themselves to repurposing waste materials from industrial companies into toys. We get asked about CAD training all the time - it's certainly the weakest link in my 3D skills armoury (for now anyway, always working on it!). Once you can design for yourself it makes 3D printing so much more useful - who wants to just print other people's designs off Thingiverse or Printables and just hope someone else has already made the thing you need? I am excited to announce that I completed a comprehensive online course on Coursera focused on Generative Design for Industrial Applications using Autodesk Fusion 360. This course emphasized the importance of exploration and iteration in engineering design, as the design process is rarely linear or straightforward. We delved into designing for traditional manufacturing methods and utilized generative design to create the perfect model. From there, we reverse-engineered the generative designs to adapt them to conventional manufacturing methods and explored fabricating the generative versions to weigh the pros and cons of each approach. I ran simulations to test the strength and validity of each part I designed. I can now use Generative Design tools to create a part for complex machine tools such as CNC machining or a part that can use a simpler manufacturing method such as sheet metal fabrication. This course has truly expanded my understanding and skills in generative design and industrial applications, and I can't wait to apply these new insights and techniques to my future projects. Having completed all of my co-op terms, I wanted to revisit a side project that had a profound impact on my journey as an engineering student. It got me hired at Haply Robotics from which I made a connection to then work at PSYONIC! After completing an introductory course on SolidWorks during my first Fall term, I entered my first Winter term with a deep fascination for transforming ideas into 3D models and then bringing them to life as physical assemblies. I set out to challenge myself and create something that would stretch my engineering skills – at that time. And so, in the Winter of 2020, I designed and 3D-printed my Puzzle Box, a 141-component assembly featuring three intricate puzzles, a combination lock, and an iris door. But how does it work? You must solve a series of puzzles to unlock the iris door: 1) Puzzle 1 – Top Side: Slide the grey blocks to remove the black part and reveal the hidden letter beneath it. 2) Puzzle 2 – Left Side: Unlock a sequence of components and use magnets to maneuver a metal ball, revealing a letter on it. 3) Puzzle 3 – Back Side: Solve an equation in Roman numerals to open a door, revealing another hidden letter. 4) Once each letter is uncovered, proceed to the combination lock and disengage its mechanism. 5) Finally, rotate the iris door to access the inside of the puzzle box! I still remember what I thought after completing this project three years ago: - I love 3D designing and printing! - I learned that reaching 80% completion is enjoyable, but the final 20% is the most rewarding. - I realized that the world of engineering is boundless, with so much more left to explore and learn. #engineering #SolidWorks #student #progess
