A funny thing happened to me on my maternity leave. I read a fantastic book called Black Tudors: The Untold Story by Dr. Miranda Kaufmann FRSA and that one book did what my education and consumption of media had hitherto failed to do for the proceeding four decades…let me know that Black people had been part of the fabric of British history for centuries. This planted the seed of an idea for a book, to bring Black British history to life in a fun fictional way for kids. And that book launches today.   Time Tub Travellers and the Silk Thief is a fast-paced, action-packed adventure with a sprinkling of Black British history for 7 to 11-year-olds. As my friend's son Adam said, "for a book without dragons, this is very good."   But the road to getting here has been long and unexpected.   It took reframing my career, when I was feeling burnt out and frustrated. Stepping away from the churn to move to a more flexible working scheme which enabled me to work more with the leaders I respected, focus on projects that made good use of my strengths, and have the time and flexibility to write.   It took 18 months of rejections from just about every children's literary agency in the UK, but trusting the feedback from the amazing young readers who loved the book, to keep persevering.   It took learning about self-publishing industry, and realising that instead of waiting for the industry to give me permission to be a children’s author, I could give myself permission instead.   It’s not a requirement of schools to teach Black British history and there are brilliant non-fiction books for kids, but not enough. There are a few fiction ones too, but not enough. Colin Vearncombe, aka Black, in his 1987 hit "Wonderful Life" https://lnkd.in/eyjtQYDF sang: "No need to run and hide, It's a wonderful, wonderful life No need to laugh and cry, It's a wonderful wonderful life". Irish Solicitors must be singing this song as they read the latest Legal Services Regulatory Authority Report for 2023 https://lnkd.in/eTxjVBhG which shows that for the period 2 September 2023 to 1 March 2024, 51.4% of complaints were inadmissible, 8.9% were not upheld, and 5.6% were withdrawn, a total of 65.9%, i.e. two thirds of all complaints. Only 8.6% of complaints were upheld. Who funds the operation of the Legal Services Regulatory Authority? – Every lawyer in the country. So lawyers have to pay for an Authority to assess complaints against them where only 8.6% are upheld. And who pays the solicitors? – The clients who do not make complaints. And people wonder why legal fees can be expensive.

The adjective, Phenomenal! comes to mind when I think of the 6 sisters below who all became nurses after being homeless. It is an incredible achievement which represents resilience. From experience, I have learned that in times of adversity, a supportive environment creates motivation, and leads to goals which propel one toward a purpose. This environment can be characterized as a superpower creating a strong bond with reinforcements nearly impenetrable. It is the equivalent of Vibranium found on the armor of my favorite Marvel fictional character, Black Panther. Just like Black Panther, the first line of defense is a shield used to provide the "best weaponry for battle." and therefore the ingredient to win against turmoil. In short, Homelessness did not create a barrier or obstacle to becoming a valuable asset to their community, it created a challenge which can be viewed as an opportunity, to fight a war that is becoming more common among result is nothing short of Greatness. I see the sisters as royalty very indicative of the Royal blue scrubs. Their story in my mind is as a Historical achievement representing low-income Black women; one of the most highly discriminated socioeconomic classes. Read article below.

In a study published in 2020 by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), Kechi Iheduru-Anderson, DNP, RN, CNE, CWCN, aimed to understand the perceptions Black nurses had on barriers to their career advancement in nursing in the U.S. A sample of 30 Black nurses from various healthcare settings identified that Black nurses face significant challenges when entering leadership positions due to racial discrimination, lack of support, etc. Additionally, the findings indicate "[Black] nurses felt they do not have access to the same career advancement opportunities in nursing as their white counterparts." Receiving support from current leadership and peers and ensuring equal opportunity in career advancement within organizations can help alleviate these problems in the future. NEWS FROM Black Veterans Project: Friday was an incredibly historic day as Monk v. United States, a legal case that was the strategic vision of Black Veterans Project, Yale Law School (under the leadership of Mike Wishnie and the National Veterans Council for Legal Redress, Inc.(NVCLR), became one of the few federal reparations cases to survive a motion to dismiss in American history! My thoughts: The decision to allow the Monk case to proceed is a seminal moment in American history. The District Court of Connecticut, in deciding to adjudicate Mr. Monk’s claims on the merits, legitimized one of many storied harms levied on African Americans. The disparate treatment of Black veterans can no longer be waived away as conjecture or purely anecdotal; it is now a matter of statistical fact and judicial debate. Monk v. United States represents a step toward justice for all veterans and a leap forward in redressing past harms suffered by African Americans at the hands of racially discriminatory systems.
