This is both: bold and stupid, but I will do it anyway ... Below is my rank of strategies of several EU automotive brands: It is a summary of their recent statements about the current status of Vision 2035 from my point of view. For those not involved in this topic, it means that we will not produce any cars with combustion engines after this date for the EU market. I put my short summary behind the brand name and on the next line I make a short comment on why it is at the position in this list. Here we go: 1. Stellantis - ”When there is a need we can switch from EV to combustion propulsion using our platform solutions.” This is a bold and pragmatic approach which puts the concern into a position where it can decide and change in future easily. 2. Skoda - ”No matter what, we will produce combustion engine cars after 2035, mainly for Asia.” Pragmatic and aimed at tackling new markets where they can utilize their know-how and good price-to-value solutions. 3. BWM - ”Regulations cannot be successful when there is no real need for it from the market.” Yes, but following just market needs won't bring success in the long term. I am missing a strong statement of what they will do and how. What makes sense to them? 4. Mercedes Benz - ”We should be cautious about the regulations and we should get more support from the politics.” Being cautious is good. However, waiting for a revelation in the form of a political decision from the EU is a failed concept. 5. Audi - ”No matter what, there is no way back from the EV path.” Sticking to a bad strategy and refusing to change perspective according to the obvious conditions of the market is a failed concept every time. The ones who are not willing to change will most probably. And yes, I think that the 2035 vision was a bad decision, however, with a good intention. 6. VW - ”Our society should stick to what was decided and continue with our vision 2035.” Honorably expressed but here I would have the same comment as I wrote in the point above for Audi … I know that I did not include all the details. It's just a fun thought experiment to me. However, I am really curious if I got something right. What do you think? Who will be the winner in around 10 years? P.S. United We Stand...divided we WILL be 'conquered'! That's the stark reality facing the European Auto Industry right now in my opinion, and much more importantly, a perspective that I know Luca de Meo shares right now. And of course, it's one thing to point out the myriad problems and challenges - far better to build a bridge over troubled waters - propose a plan, build a consensus...and execute! So bravo Luca for your 'Letter To Europe' 👏 Advocacy for a sustainable, inclusive and competitive automotive industry, or in other words:- Vision. Mission. Purpose. Having spent time in conversation with the letter's author at The Geneva International Motor Show, and then heard him discussing an exciting collaboration between European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) & Eurelectric in Brussels - it's all a timely 'call to arms'! I hope to see this noble and important ambition 'come to life' and I'm FULLY behind it - and happy to help in any way I can! Izzy Whizzy - let's get busy! 🤝 #automotive #supplychain #electricvehicles #management

Long View: While the specter of the largest automotive market in the world is mouthwateringly appealing, attempting to capture that market against 100 other competitors, many of them domestic and highly subsidized or owned by the state, makes for an uneven playing field. Home team always wins in China.

But things have changed since then. ◇ The industry is facing a range of issues, from regulation to macroeconomics, China and EVs. ◇ Issues in the automotive sector may also have spill over effects onto the wider German economy, which has been struggling for some time now.

Reflecting on the Challenges Facing the Automotive Industry in Europe – The Path Forward Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the Strategic Advisory Board meeting for the SA&AM Cluster, where we engaged in a deep and constructive discussion about the significant challenges facing the automotive sector in Europe. The data shared during the session paints a sobering picture of the industry's current landscape: ➡ Volkswagen (VW) is planning mass layoffs and considering closing down factories in Germany. ➡ Audi has announced the closure of its factory in Belgium due to weak demand for its E-tron electric model. ➡ Wielton is experiencing a decline in orders, leading to the reduction of employment levels. ➡ Volvo is withdrawing its commitment to gasoline engines, committing to a fully electric fleet by 2030. ➡ Northvolt is reducing staff in Sweden while seeking investors for its Gdańsk division. Chinese automotive giants are expanding their presence in Europe: ➡ Geely is exploring opportunities, including interest in the Izera project in Poland. ➡ Chery is investing in electric vehicle production in Spain (Barcelona, Bilbao). BYD is planning to build electric car factories in Hungary. ✅ These developments underscore the serious challenges facing the industry: declining demand, rising costs, and increasing competition, particularly from Chinese companies. The European automotive sector is at a critical inflection point, where traditional business models are no longer sufficient. ✅ The Urgency of Digital Transformation: The key takeaway is that digital transformation is essential. European automotive companies must digitize processes and innovate in products and business models to remain competitive. This transformation will require leveraging technologies like AI, robotics, and data analytics across manufacturing, supply chains, and customer service. ✅ The future success of the industry hinges on bold decisions and rapid innovation. The companies that embrace this change will lead the way in shaping the next era of mobility. ✅ Special Thanks: I would like to extend special thanks to Rafał Żelazny , Jacek Bialik , Prof. Marcin Lis, for their insightful contributions and engaging discussions during the meeting. Your perspectives and expertise were invaluable in shaping the conversation about the future of the industry. Looking forward to continuing these important conversations and working together to ensure the long-term success of the European automotive sector.
