What to Read This #Summer 📚 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. On the occasion of a workshop organised as part of the 2023 UIA World Congress of Architects CPH 2023, the Architects' Council of Europe (ACE-CAE) and the Region I of the International Union of Architects (UIA - International Union of Architects Region I) released a joint publication entitled 'High-quality Architecture and Built Environment: a Political Goal'. This publication puts the spotlight on recent policy initiatives, at EU and national levels, that support a high-quality architecture and built environment, as well as Baukultur. High-quality #Baukultur is about society’s responsible handling of its built environment and its architecture.It requires and implies an increased participation of society in care for, and development of, the built environment, but also quality-based processes throughout the life-cycle of projects. Yesterday, invited by my former student at the School of Architecture and Environmental Studies of Universidad del Diseño, and colleague Vicky Adis, I lectured at the School of Architecture of Universidad Latina. The topic of the talk was "Architecture Here and Now. Theoretical-Critical-Ethical Architectural Thinking," with yet another subtitle: "How should we think and make architecture in Costa Rica?"

Such true words and sentiment on the topic of Building Performance Evaluation - thanks Bill Bordass and the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI). Some punch quotes, especially: "One also needed a good flight plan, take-off, descent, and in level flight, to ensure that outcomes were not hi-jacked, for example, by a myopic value engineer" ! It would be interesting to quantify how much BPE happens nationally, and to what level of detail... and also to share and celebrate the quantitative benefits that BPE have rewarded, to help incentivise its deployment on other projects where costs are seen to be the barrier.
