Time to get inspired! If you are in #Brussels don't miss the EUmies Awards new exhibition 'Empowering #Europe. Arquitectures Catalanes' that shows the Catalan architectural works nominated for the EUmies Awards from 1988 to the present. Organized by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe and #CreativeEurope, the exhibition showcases the nominated projects built in Catalonia or designed by Catalan studios across Europe, that have helped shape both Catalonia and Europe while reflecting on initiatives and policies that have strengthened Europe in various fields, such as social cohesion, ecological challenges, material experimentation, technological innovation, and economic growth. International experts and juries have awarded 7 of these Catalan architectural works with the Prize in the categories of Architecture (1992 and 2015), Emerging (2011, 2015, 2022, and 2024), and Young Talent (2020). These projects structure the exhibition into five thematic groups, reflecting on: providing cities with a network of public facilities; creating new landscapes or intervening in existing ones; new models of collective housing; architectural legacies linked to major events; and the rehabilitation, reuse, and transformation of pre-existing architectures. — ➡️ EXHIBITION February 17 - Mid-May, 2025 Espai Catalunya Europa, Brussels

How the EU Culture Compass will shape Europe’s Future – ACE Joins the Dialogue Last week, ACE participated in the European Commission’s inaugural consultation on the #CultureCompass – the new EU Strategic Framework for Culture. The European Commission is taking significant steps toward shaping the future of Europe’s cultural landscape. Under the leadership of Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture, and Sport, the Commission is launching the Culture Compass as a guiding framework to enhance cultural policy making across Europe. Over 50 cross-sectoral and sector-specific cultural organisations gathered on 20 March for an insightful discussion on the initiative, a key part of the Commissioner’s mandate. ACE President Ruth Schagemann shared her perspective: “The core principles guiding cultural cooperation in the EU must be rooted in Quality and Identity. Quality, as defined by the #Davos #Baukultur Quality System, transcends aesthetics—it’s about sustainability, inclusion, and fostering a sense of belonging. #Architecture is not merely construction; it is a cultural expression of our identity and a reflection of #Europe’s diverse heritage.” #architecture #culture #europe #policy

#Affordable #Housing - Addressing the #Housing Crisis in the Union Conference' in the European Parliament Yesterday, a conference co-organised by the European Commission and the European Parliament focused on the ongoing #housing crisis and explored potential EU-level solutions. MEPs, Commission representatives, and other EU institutions had the opportunity to hear from national and regional authorities, as well as stakeholders, about the efforts underway in EU countries to improve access to affordable housing. On this occasion, Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said: "And we are here because we need to deliver more decent #housing. It is not just about increasing the quantity of Europe's housing stock; it is also about quality. We need to invest in decent, accessible and durable houses, well connected to local infrastructure – for health and education, services and resources – which provide the building blocks of communities, and the foundations of our societies. We can draw inspiration from the #NewEuropeanBauhaus, which promotes buildings that are #sustainable, #inclusive and enriching for their local environment ». ACE President, Ruth Schagemann, contributed to the discussion, emphasising that the key to increasing #affordable #housing in Europe lies in fostering innovation, quality, and collaboration. Quality, in this context, means ensuring decent, comfortable, and sustainable living conditions, while also prioritizing accessibility and affordability.
