Making machine learning more sustainable: Neural networks made of light   Dr Clara Wanjura and Prof Florian Marquardt propose a new way of implementing a neural network with an optical system which could make machine learning more sustainable in the future. The researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light have published their new method in Nature Physics, demonstrating a method much simpler than previous approaches. Congratulations to Markéta Icha Kubánková on receiving the Hermann Neuhaus Prize from the Max Planck Society (MPS)! 👏👏 The prize, worth 25,000 euros, recognizes excellent postdocs and research group leaders who are conducting research with the potential for application at a Max Planck Institute. Dr Kubánková from the Department of Biological Optomechanics of MPL Director Prof Jochen Guck is investigating whether and how the physical properties of cells in human blood or tissue change during disease. She wants to use the findings on mechanical cell changes during disease for diagnostic purposes. Kubánková's research is carried out in close collaboration with the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Universitätsklinikum Erlangen as part of the newly established Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) in Erlangen. "The work leading to the prize was a team effort and I am very grateful to my colleagues at MPL, MPZPM, FAU and the Uniklinikum Erlangen, as well as all the other participants, for their support. We will use the prize money to progress with medical research", said Kubánková. This year's Hermann Neuhaus Prize was awarded twice: to Markéta Icha Kubánková, MPL, and Oren Moscovitz, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. Research Group Jona Kayser: Cellular Evolution Using genetically modified cancer cells, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light are able to decipher the underlying physical mechanisms and tissue dynamics influencing tumor therapy resistance.    This image shows a dynamic two-dimensional community of melanoma cells (cancer cells) which have been genetically modified to fluoresce. In this section, one can observe how cells can align themselves harmoniously due to their complicated mechanical interactions. This phenomenon is known as „nematics“. Such processes not only play a decisive role in embryonic development, but can also be observed in cancer tissues. © 📸: Maximilian Eiche
