In 2023, I submitted 18 proposals and won 8. “What can I learn from this?”, I wondered on my 3-hour, no WIFI flight home from Christmas break. Lesson 1: Strategic planning, event production, and community engagement were the three types of projects I spent the most time on. When I first started Small Wins, I wasn’t sure how to talk about my expertise, but after 8 years, these are the types of projects I do repeatedly, across all different clients and cause areas. What I like most about these projects is the depth at which I partner with an organization and how much I get to learn alongside their team as they create and plan for their future. I’m knackered! 💤 (I apologise in advance if this post comes out like an actual brain fart!) Today I took my quarterly road trip from Bristol to Newbury to spend the day with Bigger Brighter Bolder and co….(by co, I mean about 50 other awesome business owners!) As members we take accountability very seriously. In addition to the monthly meetings, content sessions and online community support, we all take time out of our respective businesses to reflect on our own performance for each quarter, the good the bad and the ugly as well as make plans for the following quarter. We do this by coming together and doing board reports to eachother. It’s empowering, eye opening, challenging, confronting but most importantly, it’s how we all grow together, get inspired and stay unstuck! By the time I get home after these sessions, I’m done. I can barely string a sentence together. Because it is so value packed and inspiring - my drive home consists of me literally chomping at the bit to take action in my business before entering the house and flopping onto the sofa! We network, we eat good food, we catch up and we support one another. Running a business is lonely. But it doesn’t have to be. There are communities out there if you know where to look. Sitting in the rain. Do you ever do that? I actually love the sound of rain. When I was younger, I definitely was in the puddles. Now I prefer hearing the rain, under an umbrella....with my coffee. It's the summer of 2024, and I'm in the midst of my first term as a school trustee. As I sat here, drinking my coffee and hearing those rain drops, I thought of a conversation I had very early on in my first year in 2022. A member of our community gave me some great advice, and I kept it with me. He said, "Rupi, it's the community boards you sit on where you can make an impact." In my first year, everything is coming at you on warp speed, the school board meetings, the rest of the other meetings, the events, and the building connections within the community. Each of us trustees sits on 5-7 boards within our community. I look forward to connecting with individuals and learning about the organizations. Thank goodness for emails as we are able to stay connected if we can't make the meeting! I had a conversation at Literacy Matters and heard about the present and future plans. We talked about the pancake breakfast they used to have at the beginning of the year. Also, the challenge of trying to start up the event again. It's those one-on-one conversations you learn more in depth about the organizations. I know it's not always possible to connect one-on-one. But that's probably one of my favorite tasks is sitting together (over coffee), having a conversation to learn about the individual, the tea, and organization. #makeithappenmonday #Abbotsford #community ##inrupiwetrustee #breakfastwithrupi #literacymatters
