The #EU's Nature Restoration Law (#NRL) is expected to be formally adopted in the coming weeks. Among other goals, the NRL aims to restore 25,000 km of free-flowing #rivers by 2030. The NRL represents an important opportunity to #restore and safeguard Europe's rivers, their #biodiversity and the #ecosystem services they provide to human society. However, its implementation faces seven key challenges that could jeopardise its success. This is the result of a scientific analysis carried out by a team of European researchers led by Leibniz Institut für Gewässerökologie und Binnenfischerei (IGB) and the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien. The scientists highlight existing ambiguities in the proposed #legislation and the potential consequences of leaving these aspects open to interpretation during the implementation process. They also suggest potential #solutions to these problems, which could help to ensure that the objectives of the #law are met > https://lnkd.in/ej7V_cFZ #WFD

The EU's new Nature Restoration Law is unique in it's ambition to restore degraded habitats across the EU by 2050, but implementing it will be challenging: the spatial scale of the rollout, the short timeframe for targets (plans are due from every EU state in 1-2 years), the need for joined-up international cooporation and the risk of unintended consequences. Now, more than ever, we need science-informed policy decision-making that takes into account the multi-disciplinarity of nature conservation. In the latest #AquaticConservation editorial, I outline my thoughts about the challenges that lie ahead - this has the potential for huge positivity, for nature and society, but how the demands of this policy are implemented will be critical. In 2023 the ShareScreen Africa (SSA) Team facilitated 80 virtual classes, exploring African conservation issues and solutions from the deeps of the ocean and soaring high with mega-eagles and vultures. We also examined the vitally important ecosystems in African soil, as well as geology. Once again, we welcomed guest experts who unlocked the fascinating ecosystems of the African savannah. We also delved into the human mind, attempting to understand and improve our relationship with nature. In this short list of talks, we offer you a small sample of our talks, selecting those presentations that shifted our understanding of conservation. https://lnkd.in/dwdZB2if

What’s the latest in Biodiversity Net Gain? Senior Ecologist Katie Smith discusses the terminology, tools, metrics and guidance developers should be aware of, now BNG is about to become mandatory for major developments in England.
