The History behind the Pendleton Roundup Queen and Court dates back to 1910 with the first queen of rodeo. As time passed rodeos in surrounding areas noticed the importance that the queen of the Pendleton Roundup played in bringing people and spectators to Pendleton. The role of the rodeo queen has changed over time and blossomed into a job that travels to parades, schools, and functions, all while being a welcoming face for the rodeo, but what has not changed is the tradition this job encompasses. The inspiration of the Pendleton Roundup queen and her court continues to thrive as young girls feel encouraged to join the family of queens and keep the tradition alive. @pen

The 114th Pendleton Round-Up kicks off today in collaboration with the Farmers Ending Hunger organization. The Wednesday performance at the 2024 Round-Up and Happy Canyon Night Pageant will be dedicated to bringing awareness to the fight against hunger in the state of Oregon and the surrounding region. Oregon holds one of the highest rates of hunger in the United States and continues to rank in the top five states for food insecurity among children. Partnering with Farmers Ending Hunger, the Pendleton Round-Up will work closely with local farmers to donate food to hungry Oregonians. Last year, the Farmers Ending Hunger organization donated over 6 million pounds of food to the Oregon Food Bank; 85% of which comes from local Umatilla and Morrow counties. Donated food is distributed through the Oregon Food Bank's extensive networks across the state.

Back again with another Travel Pendleton recommendation! 23+ The name 23+ is a reference back to the owner, Joe's, rodeo days. Traditionally, bullriding is judged by two judges. Each judge marks the rider 1-25 on how well he rides and the bull 1-25 on how well he bucks, for a total out of 100 points. Any score over 90 is considered to be an excellent ride. If you were to score 23 on a 23-point bull you would be 92 points. Since retiring from bull riding, Joe has made the effort that it takes to reach that mark of excellence in bull riding and put into leatherwork. The storefront is located across from the Pendleton Round-Up grounds, next to the Pendleton Round-Up & Happy Canyon Hall of Fame. During the roundup, you can find him and other makers in his Chute Gate Marketplace.

Good Morning, Pendleton! If work didn't call, we'd be swinging by Hamley Cafe and Wine Bar for a coffee this morning (we'll make it before the end of the week). It's located just between the Hamley Western Store and the Steakhouse in the heart of downtown Pendleton. The Café is a treat for those who enjoy a light breakfast and coffee. For our brunch people, you can order pizzas, wine, and their signature tower of sangria, a Hamley tradition since 1883 after 11 am.

Hamley Steakhouse A true gem is the heart of downtown Pendleton, they serve the top 2% of American beef, USDA Prime, and quality craftsmanship and hospitality. The old West-style saloon is the perfect piece to their hometown and a great place for you to enjoy your favorite hot toddy or frosty cold one while in town for the Round-Up. @travelpendleton

September kicks off Women in Rodeo month! It all started in 1948 when a group of ranch women met in San Angelo, Texas, to address the treatment they faced in the male-dominated world of rodeo. These pioneering ladies fought for equal opportunities and established the Girls Rodeo Association (GRA) to ensure women had a legitimate platform to compete. The platform's primary purpose was to give women legitimate, honest opportunities to compete in all-girl rodeos as well as to establish an alliance with the Rodeo Cowboys Association to host women's events in conjunction with RCA-sanctioned rodeos. The group drafted and approved rules and regulations and enacted a point system to crown world champions. The women's rules took effect in May 1948, and GRA board members went to work, persuading rodeo committees and producers to hold women's contests according to GRA rules. The group included barrel racers, ropers, roughstock riders, and trick riders, but they garnered strength from each other to take a stand in the rodeo world that held the belief that a female's place was more in the kitchen than in the rodeo arena. Over the years, the GRA has played a crucial role in empowering women in rodeo. Working tirelessly to create an environment for female athletes and elevate women's rodeo to the level it is today. The Association celebrated its 75th year in 2023 with four of its founding members including Dusek, Dixie Reger Mosley, Mitzi Riley, and Fay Ann Horton Leach.

Since 1883, the Hamley family has been committed to delivering unmatched craftsmanship to working cowboys, rodeo contestants, and western horsemen everywhere. In 1905, Hamley & Co. established its permanent home in Pendleton, Oregon, setting up shop in the very building serving as the heart of their operation today. J.J. and Henry Hamley, the sons of the original craftsman, carried on the family legacy, creating legendary saddles and pioneering innovative designs, along with custom work that extends to bits and spurs. The tradition of quality lives on in every piece.

God bless our working dogs. Thank you for following us through high water, muddy bottoms, rocky slopes, and snowy pastures. Thank you for working just as hard, if not harder, than our hired hands. Thank you for listening when your name is called and using your God-given instincts to get the job done. Thank you for loving us and protecting our children. God Bless our working dogs. #NationalDogDay
