Head of Civil Engineering SBB ¦ Civil engineer with a focus on economic efficiency and organisational development (EMBA HSG)
It was once again a very interesting UIC Meeting of Panel of Structural Experts in Paris with numerous infrastructure managers from Europe. First-hand updates on ongoing innovation projects, developments in standardisation at the UIC and CEN offered great added value. I took the opportunity to thank my colleagues for their much-appreciated contribution to the benchmark on Knowledge Management & Leadership. I conducted the benchmark to answer the question "How much expertise do infrastructure operators need and how can this expertise be secured in the long term?" Here my conclusion: 1) Knowledge management does not stop at the company's boundaries; external factors such as gap of skilled employees and availability of training programmes must also be taken into account. 2) A high level of externalisation at infrastructure operators creates the risk that knowledge will be lost and the necessary skills can no longer be covered. 3) In-house expertise and resources are required to build new engineering structures safely and efficiently and to be able to use existing engineering structures as long and efficiently as possible. 4) Knowledge management methods will only be successful if there is an open culture of information and knowledge sharing. This requires a maximally pronounced transformational leadership culture and a moderately pronounced transactional culture. Many thanks Didier Van de Velde, Ronald van der Zwan, Andrea Vecchi, Durot Frédéric and others. #UIC PoSE, #SBB

Close dialogue and communication is crucial in large and complex projects. Many thanks for a pleasant and constructive management meeting and inspection of the construction site.
Some would say that a major airport is designed around the bag handling system (BHS). At Gardemoen, Avinor is replacing the old BHS with a brand new system while the airport is fully operational! Wow! COWI is delivering engineering design services, and earlier this week myself and a few good colleagues were invited to a dialogue meeting with Avinor's project management team to discuss progress and what we have learned so far during the design and construction process. We concluded the meeting with a tour on site, and I must say that I am very impressed to see how this large scale project is moving forward! Thank you very much Arvid Lochert and team for your hospitality!

As we celebrate Engineers Week, meet STV's Terry Davies, a dedicated construction manager and resident engineer at Hawk Falls Bridge Replacement for Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Proudly representing STV, where innovation meets expertise in engineering! Here's what Terry loves most about her work and the advice she has for aspiring engineers: No two days are the same, and no two projects are the same. There’s the excitement when the project starts up, like the start of a new school year, and the satisfaction when it’s done. I can point and say, “We built that!” Whatever branch of engineering you start in, don’t expect to be there for long. As you move along your career path, management becomes more and more important. Expect to get an advanced degree or additional training (MBA or PMP). Let's celebrate the diverse and dynamic world of engineering this Engineers Week! #EngineersWeek #Engineering #CareerJourney #BuildingTheFuture #MakingCommunitiesBetter

“Building the people who build the work” Training is key~. At all levels. If we don’t train our people then we’re setting them up for failure.

The talent pipeline threshold of pain is the best thing to happen to our industry. Can’t find them? Can’t keep them? Stupid money chasing “B” and “C” talent? All this serves as a foundational argument for industry and organizational culture change. And not as a noble cause, but as a competitive edge and growth strategy. My mantra of “Building the People Who Build the Work” reverses the course of a market or project-centric contractor philosophy. And because so few are doing it well, the opportunity to leverage it is significant and compelling. I am honored to have contributed to the leadership edge these companies are providing to their people and serving as the sharp end of the spear of changing our industry. Shoal Group Pty Ltd today celebrated the agreement with Engineers Australia for access to its Engineering Workforce Credentialling (EWC) Program. The agreement with Engineers Australia signals Shoal’s #commitment to maintaining engineering and professional #standards. This is important in the development of Shoal’s engineers, providing them a path and support to attain Chartered Professional Engineer (#CPEng) status. It also provides access to an extensive library of resources and papers, opportunities to join technical colleges, societies, and interest groups, and the ability to attend networking and training events. These credentials are also critical as States and Territories introduce #registration requirements for the provision of professional engineering services. Shoal has recently supported over 30 engineers to attain Chartered Status. In addition to the EWC, Shoal participates in the #EngineersAustralia Graduate and Emerging Leaders programs. As part of the EWC Senior Engineering Managers in Shoal who are already CPEng can receive support in attaining Engineering Executive (#EngExec). At the signing were Matthew Wylie (Shoal, Head of Engineering), Shaun Wilson (Shoal, CEO), Jan Irvine (Engineers Australia, General Manager South Australia), Dr Derek Rogers (Shoal, Chief Engineer), and Jason Thornhill (Engineers Australia, Senior Client Manager SA & NT). #digitalengineering #systemsengineering #modellingandsimulation #complexsystems

🌍 Building a Sustainable Future Together with TDA Manufacturing 🌍 On June 12th, we had the pleasure of meeting with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) Materials Research Lab. To share resent research and new empirical designs using tire-derived aggregate (TDA). We discussed the ten key properties of TDA and seventeen practical use cases, engaging with MNDOT’s research division, management teams, and other stakeholders over a 1.5-hour session. The response was very encouraging. Attendees appreciated the insights into TDA’s development over the past 36 years, especially its potential for cost savings and innovative applications. This collaboration marks a significant step as MNDOT reviews their policies on TDA usage. Our commitment to the circular economy drives us forward, at MNDOT's recommendation and we're excited to seek partnerships with design-build firms to explore new markets and opportunities. Together, we can continue to build a more sustainable and efficient future. Thank you to everyone involved for your dedication to sustainable innovation. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible in civil engineering and infrastructure development. #TDAManufacturing #SustainableFuture #CircularEconomy #TDA #MNDOT #Collaboration #Innovation #Infrastructure #DesignBuild #Sustainability
