"Commercial will like this!" It was great to hear Colleen Stover's response when she interviewed Justin H. on The Space Policy Show. Colleen is from the Center for Space Policy & Strategy and interviewed Justin following his joint presentation with Shoal Group Pty Ltd CEO, Shaun Wilson, at the 13th International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety Conference. They presented a paper focused on the safety aspects of Australia’s modernised space regulatory framework. A benefit of the Australian legislation is that it caters to a wide variety of space activities, risk profiles and complexities. In the webcast, Justin was speaking about understanding the risk associated with the launch and reentry activity quickly. The interview begins around the 31-minute mark of the webcast, Episode 144: Partnering for Safe, secure, Sustainable. Listen and watch the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gE6Yy6e2 The paper was co-authored by Shena Howell, Shaun Wilson, Jeremy Margrie, John Wharington and Sam Randell, from Shoal, Justin Hill and Adam Clash, from the Australian Space Agency, and Bill Barrett, from Asia Pacific Aerospace Consultants Pty Ltd. A complex systems design company, tackling challenging problems in Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure & Energy
About us
DEFENCE | SPACE | TRANSPORT |INFRASTRUCTURE | ENERGY Shoal is complex systems design company. We use Systems Engineering combined with Modelling, Simulation and Analysis to help our clients define, analyse, decide, optimise, and deliver technology-intensive projects in complex environments across Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure and Energy. We understand that complexity can rapidly escalate and create pressure on already tight schedules, capability realisation, and budgets. Or all three. Our approach is not to reduce or over-simplify. We embrace the uncertainty in complexity and use our expertise to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Adelaide, our team extends across Australia and New Zealand.

Shaun Wilson is at the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC) this week, Australia's largest mining event. As the industry transitions to a greener future, there are plenty of complex systems challenges ahead, an area in which Shoal Group Pty Ltd excel! Shoal uses complex system design approaches, including systems engineering and physics-based modelling and simulation, underpinned by digital engineering, to understand stakeholder needs and constraints and to create energy solutions that can be delivered at acceptable risk. We're currently working on energy infrastructure and supply chain challenges in the sector. https://lnkd.in/gT68cS6e #electrification #decarbonisation #mining #systemsthinking #digitalenginering

Only a few days remaining in our 2024 Travel to Work Cup and the competition is heating up as our teams build their points to see who will top the table. After an early lead by Shoaler Derby, it seems that The Commutist Manifesto has almost caught up and it's looking to be a nail biter! There's plenty of passion involved, as the winning team will get $200 to donate to their chosen charity. Shoalers are earning points as they ride, walk, catch public transport or rideshare to work, to reduce our commute carbon emissions. #carbonemissions #ride2work #systemsthinking #sustainability

Graeme Dunk, PhD, will be featuring at the Submarine Institute of Australia's 12th Biennial Conference next month. As a long-term commentator and researcher on Australian defence industry, he has been invited to facilitate a panel discussion on 'The capability and capacity in the domestic industrial base is a fundamental aspect of deterrence'. Graeme has undertaken significant research on the role of industry in supporting deterrence capability, discussing the relationships between Australian policy, geostrategic circumstances and National Defence Strategy, along with the role and potential of Australian industry. The panel will include Kate Louis, Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) and Brent Clark, Australian Industry & Defence Network (AIDN National). The conference will be held in Canberra from the 4th to the 6th of November 2024. This year's conference theme is 'Australian submarines - Cornerstone of Deterrence. https://lnkd.in/gzrb9FZ #futuresubmarine #defence #systemsthinking

We are very proud to sponsor The National Firefighter, an organisation dedicated to sharing knowledge and research with Fire Stations and Fire Authorities across Australia. As leaders in systems thinking, we understand the value of knowledge, research, and collaboration in complex environments. Just like the firefighting community, we work to bring all the pieces of a system together - helping our clients make better decisions, manage resources effectively, and adapt to ever-changing conditions. We’re driven by our ambition to apply systems thinking to bring about positive change and proud to support The National Firefighter in their mission too. https://lnkd.in/gaCFiq5f *Shoal is a sponsor of The National Firefighter organisation and publication only. #firesafety #emergencyservices #criticalsystems #systemsthinking

Shoal Group Pty Ltd has purchased 126 tonnes of carbon offsets through Greenfleet. Supporting to build a sustainable future is important to Shoal, as a company, and to Shoalers in our team. So, at the end of each financial year, we calculate our carbon emissions. Tools like Uber for Business and Corporate Traveller Australia help us track emissions from our transport, while we also account for office power use and staff commuting habits. After totalling it all up, we then purchased the carbon offsets that will be realised in the planting of protected, biodiverse, native forests in Australia and New Zealand. We are proud to be partnering with Greenfleet to take climate action and offset our carbon emissions through native reforestation. https://lnkd.in/gYk7T8bc #Greenfleet #GrowingHope #ClimateAction #systemsthinking #culture #values

On any given workday, you would ordinarily find Matt Kelly representing Shoal Group Pty Ltd on a defence or space client site. As a #SystemsEngineer, he’s often embedded into a client team, supporting capability definition or undertaking verification and validation activities. But that hasn’t been the case for the past five months! From the 17th of April 2024 and for the next 143 days, Matt walked 3,837km (4,900,000 steps) and a total elevation of 139,859m during 1,142 hours of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. The freedom and simplicity of life on the trail didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for numbers, with his first update back to our shoal being these key statistics! Returning to Shoal a couple of weeks ago, he was keen to share his journey. https://lnkd.in/gG6D42Db #LifeintheShoal #systemsthinking #flexiblework #EVP #ShoalerLife

Yesterday, Shoalers took part in National Ride2Work Day, Australia’s largest celebration of commuter riding! Our team fully embraced the day, with many choosing to ride, run, or take public transport to work as part of our ongoing Travel to Work Cup competition too. With 'engineering solutions' being our main game, Matthew Orman and Paul Greenhalf took their commute to another level, planning this 'Strava Art' on their way to work ... their commute was a little longer than usual! For the next two weeks, Shoalers will continue making thoughtful choices by riding, walking, using public transport, or ridesharing to work. Each kilometre travelled earns points for our teams, and the team with the most points at the end of the two weeks will win a $200 donation for their chosen charity. Through small actions, we’re collectively raising awareness of how our travel choices can help reduce carbon emissions. Every step counts! #Ride2Work #commuterevolution #systemsthinking #systemsengineering

The 2024 Travel to Work Cup starts today at Shoal Group Pty Ltd! For the next two weeks, Shoalers will be making a considered choice to ride, walk, catch public transport or rideshare to work. For each kilometer we travel, we'll earn points for our team. The team with the highest points at the end of the two weeks will earn a $200 donation for their chosen charity. This is just one of the initiatives we have to raise awareness of how our choices can reduce carbon emissions and, in a small way, live our purpose to 'apply systems thinking to bring about positive change'. #sustainability #carbonemissions #ridetowork #lifeintheshoal #systemsthinking #culture #values
