Dr. Sullivan is an Associate Professor of Healthcare Management at the Sawyer School of Business at Suffolk University and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine/Center for Primary Care at Harvard Medical School. During this session, attendees with learn how to: - Differentiate between what can and should be communicated outside of executive leadership and board meetings, and what should remain confidential. - Apply tools and strategies to manage crisis communications and public relations. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending my first American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) event in Houston, hosted in collaboration with the Healthcare Leadership Quorum. It was, by far, my most enriching educational networking experience to date! The discussions were engaging, inclusive, and highly informative. The passion and innovative thinking of these leaders towards enhancing community healthcare were truly inspiring. Each panel could be its own post with so many good nuggets of info, but I've condensed the key highlights that resonated most with me below. Human Capital & People Strategy (Panelists: Dr. Stephen Spann, Dr. David Persse, Erica Littlejohn Burnette) 〰 Medicine is in danger of moving from a relational experience to a transactional one 〰 "It is hard to charge for 5 minutes of honest listening." – Dr. David Persse 〰 Emphasize upstream care (PCP / SDOH) & evolve towards innovative delivery models 〰 A staggering ~19.3-year life expectancy gap exists between the wealthiest and poorest Houston residents. AI in Healthcare (Panelists: David Burnett, MSN, NI-BC, Dr. Jordan Dale, Angela Wilkins) 〰 Start slowly and proceed intentionally 〰 Prioritize education on risks & quality control 〰 AI is useless unless it works within the workflow Mental Health (Russell Meyers, Carlie A. Brown, MPH, MHA, Wayne Young, MBA, LPC, FACHE) 〰 HIGH need for agility and creative thinking 〰 The need to integrate mental health into overall healthcare to combat stigma and silos **Mental health care is just a type of healthcare** 〰 There is a 29-year life expectancy gap between those with and without mental illness, largely due to unmanaged chronic conditions. 〰 The care pathway for patients with mental illness often leads to the back of a squad car rather than a PCP or ED. These insights underscore the critical need for systemic change in our approach to healthcare.
