Our staff recently donned their high-vis vests to help 20,000+ high school students learn to be street smart at the annual bstreetsmart road safety event. The three-day event is the brainchild of passionate trauma service clinicians at Westmead Hospital, to educate young people about road safety. Our Institute of Trauma and Injury Management (ITIM) has proudly supported bstreetsmart since 2015. "The morning started with a live action crash scene that, while confronting, captured the attention of the students in the arena," says Monica Tamas, Manager of the ACI's Gastroenterology and Medical Imaging Network, who volunteered at the event. "The students heard from survivors of car crashes, who reflected on the lifelong impact of living with a traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury. Families who have lost a loved one shared their experiences of grief. "Young people are disproportionally represented in road trauma accidents," explains Loren McDonald, ITIM's Clinical Review and Education Officer. Hot off the press! The printed Emergency Care Assessment and Treatment (ECAT) protocols have just landed, and are making their way to NSW Health emergency departments. The printed protocols complement the digital version and give emergency nurses the option to refer to printed guidance on the most common emergency presentations by children and adults. They are especially useful when online access might be restricted, ensuring emergency nurses are prepared for anything! The ECAT program is transforming patient and health staff experiences in the emergency department by empowering nurses to provide more care up front, and in a consistent way across NSW. Thank you to our dedicated Emergency Care Institute team and the experts from across NSW Health who put in countless hours of their time and expertise to produce this vital resource. Today we're celebrating David Follent, who's graduated with a Master of Social Change Leadership, through the prestigious Atlantic Fellows for Social Equity (AFSE) program and University of Melbourne. 🎉 "My Masters project focused on how shared decision making could re-balance the power dynamics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people interacting with the healthcare system," explains David. "As part of the fellowship, the Atlantic Institute hosted a global convening at University of Oxford, where I connected with a global community of Atlantic Fellows. It was an incredible and life changing experience." "After graduation, the next step of my fellowship project is to work with national Indigenous health leaders and organisations to develop a position on what shared decision making between Indigenous patients and healthcare providers should look like. "The aim is to create a foundation to address the power imbalance between patients and the clinicians. I believe that empowering patients will help ensure better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people on healthcare journeys. David also attended the International Shared Decision Making Conference at CHUV / Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois and launched an international Indigenous global network focused on what shared decision making looks like for Indigenous people. "We've really only scratched the surface on how transformative shared decision making could be for our mob and communities around the world," says David. The ACI has supported David's Fellowship, which builds on and complements the Finding Your Way project. Congratulations to our latest Certificate in Healthcare Redesign course graduates! 🎓 These healthcare innovators proudly join 800+ alumni from across NSW Health who've completed this valuable course over the past 15 years. The certificate is awarded by the ACI's Centre for Healthcare Redesign in partnership with the University of Tasmania. Dr Alexander Cardenas, Program Director for Health Facility Change at Health Infrastructure, gave the keynote presentation and Susan Pearce AM presented the graduates with their certificates. The projects undertaken by this cohort aim to improve mental health and child and family health services, reduce the impact on emergency departments, streamline medication delivery, improve treatment in the community for older people, address general dental backlogs and bolster palliative care services. Unlocking the road to recovery, Regina Nagy, our Alcohol and Other Drugs Network Manager, recently shared how clinicians can improve the effectiveness of drug and alcohol treatment, at the inaugural Australasian Cognitive Remediation in Mental Health Conference. "The ground-breaking Alcohol and Drug Cognitive Enhancement (ACE) program allows clinicians to screen for, and improve, a client’s brain function, so that clients can engage more effectively with alcohol and drug treatment," explains Regina. "Trials showed increased numbers of people completing treatment, giving them a better chance of reaching their treatment goals."
