Is there a better example of 'looks being deceiving' when it comes to this heritage site? Marooned on a traffic island not far from the sea in a rather humdrum suburb of Selsey, this unprepossessing structure is, in fact, one of the rarest types of listed building in the country. It's an acoustic mirror https://lnkd.in/enk66xVi and was listed in 1999. Built in 1916 to listen out for the engines of approaching warships and aircraft coming across from mainland Europe it was, at the time, cutting-edge technology. Radar superseded sound mirrors within two decades but the learning from the earlier technology (how to pinpoint the position of enemy ships and aircraft by connecting the outputs of several sound mirrors) helped speed the development of radar https://lnkd.in/eBu5zvJJ. Almost all other sound mirrors have gone but a freak twist of planning fate saved this one as it was converted into a house (yes, really!) in the late 1930s. A 2009 development scheme to make the mirror a lounge wall of a much larger house looks to have been stalled for years, so it still stands somewhat camouflaged and run-down. Perhaps prospective purchasers realised that if the whole of the lounge wall was an acoustic mirror, then all your neighbours could surely hear your every whisper. It's a great strength of the heritage protection system in this country that it has the flexibility, backed by national and local expertise and knowledge, to identify, designate and then continue to protect such fascinating fragments of our past, whatever they look like.

Chartered Landscape Architect, Urban Designer, Graphic Designer and sits on the Devon Countryside Access Forum
Absolutely brilliant video from the GCN team and Simon Richardson. Reflects many of the urban design issues we try and change - large radius junctions, wide crossing distances, intimidating roads, car-first priority, street clutter in footways etc. 🚗 Our cities literally punish people who can't afford cars or want to be more physically active #secondclasscitizen ⛔, but there are so many simple tools at our disposal - Bollards for modal filters, rest-on-red traffic lights (this worked really well on North Street in Exeter), £2 bus fares, and Dutch entrance kerbs which are now sold by companies across the UK. Here's an image of one from Adam Tranter https://lnkd.in/eczHypUj. 🚶♀️ Next time you're out walking - Think about every junction you stop at, the friction added to your journey, how you need look over your shoulder to see if you'll get runover, and then compare this to the relative ease for the cars in the road next to you 👀 https://lnkd.in/e8XFQJnS 🌲 WSP in the UK, Martin Smith, Robert Lyness, Tim Arkell, Adrian Winstone, James O'Donnell.
