♻️ South Africa’s recycling sector employs over 180,000 workers, preventing 3 million tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere each year. 🌍 🌿The #FlexiblePackagingSolutionShowcase, hosted by our partners GreenCape in Johannesburg, explored alternatives to flexible multilayer and polypropylene packaging (PP)—key to transforming plastic recycling. In partnership with the South African Plastics Pact, this event supports the 2025 goal of 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging. 🌱Shingi, Head of Programmes and Partnerships, Southern Africa emphasised the crucial role #Youth and #InformalEconomies, stating: "Youth in townships and informal economies are the driving force behind building a circular economy. By empowering them through strong partnerships and collaborations, we can truly transform the recycling value chain. Their energy and innovation are the key to a sustainable future. " 🔦Why this matters?💡 PP flexible packaging and multilayer multipolymer packaging are poorly collected and recycled in South Africa (and globally). Members of the South African Plastics Pact are committed to redesigning packaging to make it both valuable for collection and recyclable. 🇳🇬 Empowering Communities, Transforming Waste 🇳🇬 Olufunto Boroffice, #CEO of Chanja Datti Recycling Co Ltd and recipient of the 2021 #WEEmpower Award for the Sub-Saharan Africa region, is pioneering a sustainable solution to Nigeria’s waste crisis while uplifting vulnerable communities. Through her innovative approach, Boroffice is not only addressing environmental challenges but also advancing education, creating safer opportunities, and promoting economic growth. At Chanja Datti, Boroffice leads a mission to convert waste into wealth, providing a platform that empowers unemployed women, at-risk youths, and waste pickers. By strategically tackling waste generation, the company offers sustainable livelihoods while mitigating environmental hazards. Recognizing the education barriers faced by Nigerian children, especially girls, Boroffice initiated the “Bottles for Books” initiative. Through this innovative program, recyclables serve as currency, enabling over 800 children to access education. This initiative aligns with #SDG4, addressing economic barriers hindering school attendance. Chanja Datti prioritizes the safety and well-being of waste pickers by providing essential training and resources. By fostering social inclusion and offering professional opportunities to marginalized groups, such as women and waste pickers, the company also contributes to #SDG8. In Nigeria, uncollected waste poses significant environmental and health risks. Chanja Datti’s Cash4Trash recycling hubs encourage civic engagement in waste management, promoting #SDG11. Delving into the enriching journey of the RecycleUP Nigeria program organized by Advance Initiative for International Development (AIIDEV Africa) has been super-enlightening. I am thrilled to share some profound insights that have shaped my perspective on circular economy, sustainability, and waste management. As a zero-waste advocate, I have further learned that education, advocacy, and innovation are crucial to achieving sustainability. The circular economy is a model of production and consumption that involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. Job creation, increased innovation reduced cost, and enhanced community and well-being are major reasons that substantiate the relevance of a circular economy. I also clearly understood that recycling is meant to be the last resort/option circular economy process. Circular economy principles include the elimination of waste and pollution, circulation of products and materials, and regeneration of nature. It's everyone's responsibility to move the environment forward. I also gained insights on setting up a circular economy-based project. As I transition forward, whether through continued participation in the RecycleUP program or exploring alternative avenues, the invaluable lessons gleaned will serve as catalysts for decisions and actions, propelling me toward contributing to a more sustainable and resilient future. #AIIDEVAfrica #CircularEconomy

Plastic waste is choking Nigeria's environment. While recycling is a solution, it faces daily hurdles: 1: No bins, no collection: Plastic ends up in the wrong places. 2: Sorting struggles: Mixed plastics are hard to recycle. 3: Money matters: Recyclers lack funding for equipment & growth. 4: Knowledge gap: Many don't know how or why to recycle. Let's support those fighting for change. We can advocate for better infrastructure, back local recyclers, educate ourselves and others, and demand eco-friendly solutions. March 18th is #WorldRecyclingDay. ♻ Recycling is a critical step in keeping valuable materials out of the environment and in a #circulareconomy. Some ingredients for successful recycling include: 💡Products designed for recycling - Brands can (and are) designing their products/packages with the end in mind - using less types of materials and using recyclable materials (such as PET) goes a long way! ♻ Using recycled material - Brands that use recycled material in the products/packages keep the circular loop going, and this demand encourages MORE recycling. 👉🏼Easy access to recycling - We know that recycling works when collection works. Do you have access to recycling in your community?
