We regret to confirm that the disruption to McLaren Health Care’s IT and phone systems was due to a criminal cyber attack. Our IT team is collaborating with external cybersecurity experts to analyze and mitigate the threat. While we haven't determined if any patient or employee data was compromised, our hospitals and clinics have implemented downtime procedures to ensure continuous care. Most of our facilities are operational, including emergency departments and most surgeries, though some non-emergent appointments are being rescheduled. Patients should attend scheduled appointments unless contacted otherwise and bring relevant medical information. We are grateful for the resilience and dedication of our team members and medical staff during this challenging time. Thank you for your understanding and support. This is a major #cyberattack for the healthcare IT sector. The compromise of Change Healthcare places patient safety at risk as pharmacies struggle to fulfil prescriptions. Furthermore, the claim of a nation-state component to the cyber-attack is an interesting twist given most healthcare cyber-attacks are generally linked overtly to cybercrime groups (even if they are hosted in nation-states that benefit from the crimes). This raises the question of what the purpose of the cyber-attack is? Is it purely financial or will this represent an evolution of targeting nationally critical infrastructure based in the private sector as a part of cyber-warfare (with financial motive being a cover story). Many questions demand many answers and I’m sure Change Healthcare and UnitedHealth Group will bring in the appropriate experts to investigate this incident and improve for the future. By now, you have likely heard about the recent cybersecurity attack on Change Healthcare that forced the shutdown of systems across the country, including patient claim payments and even prescription fulfillment. For an organization this large, part of Optum and owned by UnitedHealth Group, the repercussions of this ransomware attack are broad. But it is not just large healthcare organizations that are the target for these types of attacks, or that feel the fallout of these breaches. In fact, this cyberattack has impacted the workflows of providers everywhere, leaving few organizations untouched. In these technological times, healthcare organizations, facilities, and practices of all sizes need to be especially vigilant and proactive about protecting their most valuable assets. https://lnkd.in/gu-ChgRV

Yuck. It is no longer a matter of it...but when. Happening to orgs of all size and complexity, regardless of industry. We have to get it right LOTS and the opportunistic jerk-faces have to get it right once. Ask yourself: How quickly can you detect (do you have telemetry, processes, round-the-clock support)? How quickly can you respond (do you have plans/procedures, know-how and/or relationships in place)? How quickly can you eradicate => confidently resume BAU?

Once the company became aware of the outside threat, in the interest of protecting their partners and patients, they took immediate action to disconnect their systems to prevent further impact of the cyberattack. Pharmacies across the country reported delays to processing prescription orders due to not being able to process payments for prescriptions through insurance because of this incident. #changehealthcare #pharmacists #retailpharmacy #cyberbreach #cyberattack #cybercrime #cybercriminals #hackers #networksecurity #networkforensics #threatintelligence #threatintel #darkweb #securityoperations #informationtechnology #ransomware #databreach Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eiFunp2G
