Sign up for this webinar in mid-July on young workers! The trend is alarming on work-related young worker fatalities and serious injuries. Their lack of experience, being placed in jobs they aren’t supposed to do, and reluctance to speak up are just a few of the reasons why young workers are sustaining injury in the workplace. Employers should treat all workers the same (FT, PT, temporary, or seasonal) with new hire training, OTJ training, and distribution of PPE.
Many students and young adults are working this summer without being aware of their rights at work. Join OSHA July 17 as we discuss young worker rights and employer responsibilities, and guide you through resources to #KeepTeenWorkersSafe. Register here: https://lnkd.in/e-DjgaRk

New Article | Why an employment relationship is important! Michelle Urquhart, Senior Associate at Tompkins Wake, delves into a recent Employment Court decision in Le Gros v Fonterra. The court emphasized that employment relationships go beyond written terms, urging employers to consider the relational aspect. In this case, a long-serving employee, Mr Le Gros, claimed additional leave based on a collective agreement, highlighting the need for a holistic approach to employment relations. Employers, take note: it's not just about contracts, but the broader context of human dynamics in the workplace. 👩⚖️🤝 Read on ➡ https://lnkd.in/gJnjzF2i #EmploymentLaw #LegalInsight #WorkplaceRelations #TompkinsWake

Where are all the workers? Super fascinating read out of the WSJ yesterday. In speaking with my parents in this generation of unretired retirees, I've heard that the barriers to employment used to be a lot less. You could literally walk into an urban planning office in New York City and ask about available positions. Both my parents got jobs this way. Today, even entry-level job postings are long lists of the reasons you can't get the job. I've seen this change myself since I started in the workforce. It was easy to get temp work and pivot into a full-time office gig. I got exposure to all the basics in my first clerical job and built up from there. I didn't even know how little qualified I was because I didn't experience the inundation of information we have today about how we're not good enough, which I'm sure plays a lot into worker psyches. As we shift into a new generation of workers, I see a reckoning on its way. AI is for sure going to take on a lot of the manual tasks that used to make up entire jobs, but it's going to leave a huge human gap that we'll have to fill. Massive student loans bills need to go so younger workers at entry level can actually afford to live (and this is just one element of a larger set of problems), but I think we also need to rethink how we qualify people for roles. AI is going to make everything easier, so why can't we do the same for job requirements? With the arrival of AI, I'm hoping to see a new over-emphasis on human skill. We're very used to ticking boxes with people and discarding them if they don't meet all the requirements, but we have to shift this way of thinking for basic survival systems to remain. Survival is also going to mean a huge shift in how people are paid, but to start, let's rethink our assessment strategies and improving how we traditionally match workers with open roles. What do you think? https://lnkd.in/ecnWHj7A

‘Wrap Around Services gives the opportunity to put the person at the center, look at what their needs are and then begin to provide for that’ Colm Markey MEP at the Irish Local Development Network Panel Discussion at the National Ploughing Championships. Across the country, Local Development Companies are helping people to find meaningful work, but understand that for a number of people, the path to employment is not straight forward and additional supports are required. As well as employment programmes, Local Development Companies may run Social Inclusion, Wellbeing and Health Equality programmes amongst others which move people who are furthest from the labour market closer to finding a placement which works for them. At the Irish Local Development Network’s stand at the National Ploughing Association / Championships, panelists discussed the importance of ‘Wrap Around Services’ Colm Markey MEP, Allen McAdam MCA Consulting and Shay Riordan , CEO of West Limerick Resources CLG share their expertise on developing job readiness, and addressing intergenerational unemployment and institutional barriers, reflecting on the value that Local Development Companies bring to individuals on their employment journey. The panel was led by John Feerick, CEO of Sligo LEADER Partnership Company CLG. Allen Meagher from Changing Ireland was on hand to capture these conversations on the day.
