Insights from Industry Leaders from an OMG23 intern Today, I had the chance to hear from industry professionals Alex Siddall Andriena Coleman and Chanelle Flavell. They provided invaluable insights into the world of marketing and branding during the intern Summer Series Presentation hosted by Hearts & Science, part of the OMG23 Summer intern program. Hearts & Science, with 8 offices across 7 states, is a company powered by purpose. This purpose-driven approach is evident in their commitment to creating emotions that ignite growth for brands, which they highlighted as being closely linked to achieving iconic growth. One key takeaway from their presentation was the concept of making iconic moves to increase Brand Heat. Brand Heat was a new term for me. Initially, I related it to Brand Awareness, but Alex Siddall clarified that Brand Heat pertains more to customers' desire for and consideration of a brand. This deeper understanding of Brand Heat, as opposed to mere awareness, emphasizes the importance of cultivating a strong, emotionally resonant brand presence that drives consumer passion and loyalty. I thoroughly enjoyed being part of this presentation and am looking forward to learning more from other amazing professionals throughout this series. Starting 2024 with our first marketing intern hire for the year! Damian Tan made an impression when he applied for a marketing internship ottertunity and responded to my punny email, inviting him for an interview. And, of course, there were many reasons why he was eventually offered an internship with OtterHalf. My takeaway from this? I'm surprised at how much of an impression a candidate can make on me just by his response to an email inviting him for an interview. There's so much I'm learning about hiring, managing a business, and about myself every day. 💡

10 Years Ago: The Summer That Changed Everything I still remember this view like it was yesterday. The New Yorker Hotel, standing tall and bright, was my home for an entire summer during my junior year of college. I was in New York City, the place where dreams are made, with an internship at IPG Mediabrands. From the outside, it seemed like I was living the dream—NYC, a hotel stay, and a foot in the door at a major company. Friends and family thought I was on top of the world. But what they didn’t see was the reality behind the glossy exterior. I was broke, depressed, and completely lost. The city that never sleeps was also the city that never stopped reminding me of how far I still had to go. That summer, I learned how to stretch a dollar, how to navigate the grid, and most importantly, how to keep pushing forward even when it felt like the world was against me. Key Lessons Learned: 1. Get Comfortable with Being Uncomfortable: Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones. That summer, I learned that embracing the unfamiliar is the first step toward becoming who you’re meant to be. 2. Try Something New: Don’t be afraid to take risks. Trying new things opens up opportunities you never imagined. That internship, even with all its challenges, was a door to great mentors! A special thank you to Sonia Riojas for simply existing - you were the first Latina I saw leading, advocating, and supporting your team and ideas. 3. Resilience is Everything: Life will knock you down, but what matters is how you get back up. That summer taught me the true meaning of resilience—an invaluable skill I carry with me to this day. Fast forward to today, and I look back at that summer not with regret, but with gratitude. That challenging time was what shaped who I am now—a marketing executive with a passion for empowering others, and a clear vision for my future. It was in those moments of doubt and struggle that I discovered my resilience and determination to succeed. The New Yorker Hotel isn’t just a building to me; it’s a symbol of how far I’ve come. So, to anyone out there who feels lost or overwhelmed—take it one day at a time. Clarity comes with consistency and purpose with persistence. #CareerJourney #CareerGrowth

IPG Health calls the program, the "Bold Beginners Program." It's so important that more strategic communication agencies offer internships like this to make students very prepared for industry. This past week in our class, we shared a beautiful movie called "The Intern." It was definitely a movie whose essence was diversity in the workplace, and so far it has taught me, with its different examples, how important it is to have a team within a culture that allows for growth. To that end, I have highlighted 3 important benefits of diversity in the workforce: -Enhanced Innovation and Creativity: Teams with diverse backgrounds, ages, and experiences bring a richer pool of ideas to the table. The movie highlights how Ben sparks creativity among Jules' young team, while he too learns new approaches to business, such as leveraging social media. -Stronger Connection with Customers: A diverse workforce better reflects the diversity within a company's customer base. This allows for better understanding of customer needs and facilitates the creation of products or services that resonate with a wider audience. The Intern subtly suggests Jules' company might better connect with older audiences after having Ben on board. -Attracting and Retaining Top Talent: Companies that prioritize diversity are perceived as progressive and inclusive, which makes them more attractive to top talent from a wider pool of job seekers. This competitive edge helps in the recruitment and retention of skilled employees. As you can see, "The Intern," while a light-hearted comedy, provides subtle but important reminders concerning age diversity in particular, and how embracing it can benefit a workplace.

Fond memories triggered by all these National Intern Day posts! Looking back on my intern days (over 20 years ago, eek), I am so grateful for the experiences I had with two different companies/organizations, both still going strong today. 👏 Shout out to the folks at the Wisconsin Innovation Service Center at UWW for giving students amazing, real-world experiences in research, product development and go-to-market strategy! 👏 And another shout out to Palmer Hamilton (formerly Palmer Synder Furniture) for enabling me all those years ago to digitize their contract records, and create a database with renewal alerts - all before I even knew what a CRM system was! To see how much the company has changed in 20 years is a great example of adaptation and strategy at work! Each of those experiences helped me build a foundation for skills I still use today and gave me exposure to the types of work I love. And when I had interns on my team, those experiences shaped my style of leadership - to give them real, challenging projects (and feedback), to provide exposure to other professionals and leaders, and to give as much business context for what they were doing as possible. And most importantly - to give them room to share ideas and to actually listen to them! Get after it interns, you'll do great things!

As my summer internship with MSNBC's The 11th Hour comes to an end, I'm starting to reflect on how much I've learned and grown over the course of 3 months. So I wanted to offer some advice to incoming fall interns: 👎 You're going to bad at something when trying it the first time. It takes practice to get it right, and feedback will only make you better. 📧 Making connections truly isn't that hard. Fight through that anxiety. Just send an email and say hello. 🧘♀️ Simply existing in a work environment and observing what's going on around you furthers your knowledge more than you know. ✋ Always be willing to help out. Offer to come in when there's breaking news. Ask if there's anything you can take off a coworker's plate. They notice. I promise you, they do. 😁 If you act confident, you'll get more opportunities. You got this job because you earned it and because you can do what you're being tasked, if not more. Make sure your team knows that you're ready to be challenged, and you will. Welcome the challenge. 📚 Last but not least, take some time to yourself! You're in a new environment with all new people; it can be overwhelming. So take a walk around the city, read a book, watch a movie, start binging a new TV show. Do something that can allow you to breathe for a few minutes and recharge so you can be your best at work the next day. I'm not going to lie, this has been some of the hardest months of my life - but in the best way possible. You can't grow without growing pains, so embrace them. You got this, interns!
