In the Medical Degree programme at Lunds universitet, students use Cochrane's educational materials and tools to better understand and interpret evidence-based medicine. Maria Björklund, who is one of the initiators, is a librarian and also teaches medical students: – The Medical Degree programme has been working very actively with a scientific approach, and we wanted to offer students a toolbox that supports those who want to learn about evidence-based medicine or produce systematic reviews themselves. Since 2018, Cochrane Interactive Learning have been integrated into the Medical Degree programme, and now the effects are starting to show. More and more students want to write systematic reviews and engage in research. – We introduced the tools before the pandemic, and at that time, there was a lack of familiarity with digital learning tools. After the pandemic, I feel like there has been a shift, and now students expect digital learning modules and even digital examinations. It is also clear that the education has become more research-oriented, and that students can work together with both doctoral students and researchers on various projects. "For a medical student with nascent research skills and a full-time core curriculum, a goal of 25 publications and presentations in the 3 years between matriculation and residency application is clearly untenable -- and frankly impossible." [quoted from the article] This is an insightful read. I've been saying it for years. This is happening not just in the US but across the globe -- including Low Middle Income Countries where young doctors-to-be are hell bent on propping their CVs with numbers/quantity (of research papers) without paying much heed to the quality of the work nor on developing a theme to it. 🚨 ⚠️ 📢 According to literature, around 75% of medical errors may have a cognitive origin. Conceptual knowledge deficits wouldn’t have a significant impact. However, acquiring thinking skills remains secondary in comparison with biomedical data and psychomotor abilities at medical schools. The clinical reasoning simulator Practicum Script landed in undergraduate education in 2019 to remediate this gap, and a multicentre large-scale pilot published in Medical Teacher has just proved that it is a valuable resource for medical students to develop their clinical reasoning skills and for teachers and institutional stakeholders to assess these competencies. In response to the need to address and train medical school educators with regards to students’ academic integrity, Kelsey Bowen, our Manager of Student Support at Ross University School of Medicine, spearheaded the development of an educational small group discussion session at AMEE, The International Association for Health Professional Education Conference earlier this year, in a session entitled: “Addressing Academic Integrity: An Educational Approach to Address Complicity in Medical Education Integrity Breaches", increasing students’ personal responsibility to stop and/or report academic integrity concerns they witness. The purpose of the session was the debrief the incident, identify their level of responsibility, and create a plan to ensure future success. “The increased use of hybrid and remote based learning activities has changed the dynamics of how we must ensure academic integrity amongst all students”, cited Ms. Bowen. This environment allowed Ross University School of Medline to pilot an innovative method of addressing student professionalism and accountability in the face of academic integrity complicity, which we were able to highlight at AMEE. Qualitative data showed students grew in their personal responsibility and response to academic integrity concerns. Here is one of many similar student reflections: If you see something, say something. Just because one was not involved, does not mean they are not responsible since it can possibly affect you as a university and future residency.” At Ross University School of Medicine, we are excited to use this model to address other areas for growth in our students, with the goal of guiding our students’ development into competent, ethical medical professionals.
