🐴 This week for Wildlife Wednesday from your Doherty Docent is the Icelandic Horse! Getting to see these guys frolicking in the wide-open spaces of Iceland was quite special. 🐴 Purest and oldest breed: Icelandic horses are one of the purest and oldest horse breeds in the world, brought to Iceland by Viking settlers in the 8th century! 🐴Unique gaits: They have up to 5 gaits, including the tölt and flying pace, which are unique to this breed. The tölt is a smooth four-beat lateral ambling gait that is comfortable and fast. 🐴 No imports allowed: To maintain breed purity and prevent diseases, Icelandic law prohibits importing horses into the country and exported horses cannot return. 🐴 Small but strong: Icelandic horses stand 12-14 hands high (4 to 5 feet tall) and weigh 600-900 pounds. Despite their small size, they are considered pound-for-pound the strongest horse breed in the world. 🐴 Adaptability to harsh climate: They have heavy double-layer coats that protect them from Iceland's harsh weather conditions. 🐴 Color variations: Icelandic horses can appear in 42 different color combinations with over 100 variations. 🐴 Friendly temperament: They are known for their friendly, docile nature and strong but workable character, making them easy to handle. #born2matter #docentlife #conservationeducation Oakland Zoo The Outlier Project

Yesterday I rode an Icelandic horse through the breathtaking scenery of the Icelandic fjords. Total bucket list day, as you can see from my giant smile. The Icelandic horse is a unique breed (the only one allowed in Iceland) that has all sorts of unique traits. They have 4, sometimes 5 gaits (most horses have 3), and are small, super hearty, and very healthy. Quite different from my delicate flower Thoroughbred. What struck me the most is the process with which these horses are kept, carefully integrating the breed’s need for nature with thoughtful domestication. In other words, owners and lovers of these incredible animals allow them to do what they do…they are out of work for 6 months of the year and allowed to climb to a high pasture up the mountain to be in the wild. They dig through deep snow for grass and navigate the treacherous terrain, to return in the spring, fat, healthy, and ready to work. The dedicated owners respect their Viking-derived horses and embrace their need to be free to do what they do, how they do it. In other words, these horses thrive because their natural needs, talents, and abilities are nurtured with care and a deep appreciation instead of being forced into tiny stalls and a lifestyle that goes against their nature. Made me think about how #lawyers are managed in their firms. Are their unique talents, skills, and abilities nurtured and rewarded, or are they being forced into a box, controlled by small thinking and a culture of fear? #law #lawfirms #management #hr #innovation
