Over 1.2 million healthcare appointments were cancelled in 2023. 😱 If only there were someone to help offset the demand for healthcare. Oh wait, there is! Junior doctors 👨⚕️👩⚕️ # NHS junior doctors are striking again today over pay. This time for a record-breaking six days. And, you know what? As a patient, I'm completely on board. Rises in flu, other respiratory illnesses, and neglected healthcare means the NHS is in for a fun January. And many of these more 'standard' ailments will be left in the hands of junior staff. Meaning more burnout, more stress, and shorter tempers. Which is going to affect patient care. The government has listened to other #healthcare workers' demands for a pay rise, but not junior doctors. Why? 🤔 Is it because of their lack of experience or seniority? In my experience, this generation of doctors is a breath of fresh air. They are much more compassionate and receptive than their senior counterparts (without so much of the ego, too). So, I believe they are very much justified in wanting to be paid fairly. Yes, seniority is important. I mean, I doubt any patient wouldn't want to see the head honcho over #healthandwellness concerns than a junior, but we've got to remember that these doctors will become those top dogs. And they'll be better because the standard of human compassion will be generally much better than many senior doctors now. Medical knowledge can be taught and learned. The Indian government is considering introducing legal safeguards for healthcare workers, who are often vulnerable to violence from patients' relatives. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and other medical associations have requested that the government introduce provisions to penalize such violence. Common misconceptions about locum work: 1.There's not enough work: Skilled locums are always in demand. There will always be locum work, and the truth is that good locums often declining work. There may be times where you struggle to find consistent work, but the pay increase you get for being a locum usually compensates for the down time. 2. You need an ABN to locum: In most cases, an ABN is required to locum. While this is true in most cases, certain agencies like LocumFind don't require the locum to have an ABN. 3. You have to pay GST: This is only the case if you use your own ABN and earn more than $75,000 per year. Years ago many of us would not have put unions and physicians in the same sentence let alone rooms. I remember when we'd whisper, unsure of its legality but knowing the career consequences of even raising the idea among colleagues would be insurmountable. Today's increasing unionizing is telling of both a privileged position doctors once occupied in healthcare but no longer do amidst mega-corporations, as well as a direness of situation these earnest protectors feel healthcare is in where they can no longer tolerate the squeeze. It used to be we advocated for our patients and them only, whereby physician needs (and those of our families) were put a very far second. Some of us advocated for our staff and trainees second, with ourselves still a far third. I'd be rich if I had a dime every time colleagues scoffed as "corporate told us how to manage our patients,” as Dr. Frances Quee, president of the Doctors Council explains to The New York Times. “You know that’s not how you’re supposed to manage your patient, but you can’t say anything because you’re scared you’re going to be fired.” When healthcare is no longer safe for nurses, physicians, trainees, and pharmacists - psychologically, physically or financially - something's got to give. There are literally lives of patients and providers at stake, in ways unlike so many other industries. I for one am proud of those standing up, including and especially the residents who've been mistreated or abused in training from time immemorial. It's maintained by academic dogma few can justify. Hopefully unions in medicine can bend the corporatization of health systems toward something that increasingly resembles care.
