Melissa Libby’s Post

Random middle of the night thought: how will Ozempic change restaurant consumer behavior? What can restaurants do about it? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Mine are below: * Restaurants need to up their doggie bag game. Since people on these drugs feel full faster, there may be an increase in taking leftovers home. We should expect this, offer it, and make it cute or pretty or sophisticated (whatever matches your restaurant). Invest in containers with your logo so you can be remembered tomorrow. * Restaurants with smaller portion sizes may be preferred. While a tasting menu seems like a lot of food to some, those smaller portions give "foodies" a chance to taste many flavors. Restaurants known for hefty portions will not be as valued to this consumer. * Alcohol sales will be affected too. Perhaps restaurants should offer some premium wines by the glass instead of only by the bottle. I can see someone splurging for one glass of Caymus. These drugs can be expensive so the impact may be felt more at higher end restaurants. But then again, perhaps the special occasion places will do well, since dining out might well become a special event for someone who's not that into eating and drinking any more.

I have been taking GLP-1 shots for over a year. First Wegovy, now Zepbound. I’ve lost 45lbs and am still losing weight (still obese too so it’s the right action). Nothing feels as wasteful as taking half of your meal home every time I go out only to throw it away 3 days later…so my wife and I often split entrees. I’m still not over the guilt from the glare given by the server …so I do splurge on the expensive drink to goose the check avg.

Great topic! I remember an Op-Ed David Chang wrote years ago where he argued that the US has too many restaurants, and therefore, all segments from QSR to Fine Dining charge too little for their food. I wonder if Ozempic and others could contribute to his vision? Many below have the right comments - more quality for the price, shareables, experience first, etc. Dunno, but great topic. PS - I love the industry and don't want a single restaurant to close, just sayin'.

Love this and it never acurred to me, but of coarse this is a real opportunity! It's fantastic to see quality emerging brands prioritizing healthy components, ingredients, and portion sizes in the dining experience - and there will be more to come. The shift towards a healthier lifestyle is a significant and enduring trend. Established restaurants known for larger portions will need to adapt by introducing menu sections that cater directly to this growing movement, thereby educating and engaging their loyal customer base. Combine that with smaller portion options to align the guest experience with the movement will not only engage their base but will begin to draw new guests.

Probably a short-term effect at higher-end places, but I think it will wane a bit toward the end of the year, once people have met their weight goals.

So interesting!! I'm all for smaller sized portions as I hate to waste food. Still - it's so interesting to look back at the diet trends you and I have have seen influence menus thru the years, like Keto, gluten free, etc., and what's still in play today. Ozempic clearly seem to be working!! So - maybe it will help redefine dining. Either way - if you're really up in the middle of the night, you can always ping me. I was def up last night!! And was sad to miss our call this morning.

More small portions available on the menu would be very welcome! I have always preferred smaller options like half portions, even at a premium price. Not everyone enjoys leftovers and for those who can only eat small portions each day, eating yesterday’s food is even less appealing.

Very interesting, Melissa. I am on Mounjaro and it has definitely affected my appetite and weight. Prior to starting on it to lower my A1C numbers, I never asked for a doggie bag. Now that I am on it, I always have leftovers so I firmly believe you are ahead of the curve on this. Restaurants need to be prepared!

Restaurants could make half of the entree available to go with high-quality take home packaging with reheat suggestions when the order is placed. Charge a small amount to have the kitchen do this. This would have appeal to both dieters and people looking for more value out of their restaurant experience.
