https://shorturl.at/fJLMP Homelessness is a complex problem that requires a complex solution. The crisis of housing insecurity strongly interplays with related crises such as food insecurity, addiction, and mental health challenges. In fact, perhaps no industry understands this better than the rental housing industry: we have seen it first-hand. That is why we must own our responsibility to leverage our resources and be part of the solution by working with communities and government toward a common goal of delivering much-needed supply. R. Jason Ashdown, our Co-Founder & CSO, penned an article for the latest edition of Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario (FRPO) FE Magazine about the critical role that rental housing providers can play in solving this crisis. The article profiles 10 Shelldale Crescent, a 32-unit Permanent Supportive Housing development in Guelph, which will be operated by Kindle Communities. 10 Shelldale is getting ready to welcome its first residents! This development will provide homes for 32 people that are currently experiencing chronic homelessness in Guelph, and it is a prime example of a rental housing provider leveraging its resources and working in collaboration with non-profit organizations, and all levels of government to solve Ontario’s housing crisis. Follow the link above to read the article (p24). --------------------------------- We’re always looking for passionate, energetic, and determined people. Does that sound like you? Anyone can become homeless – and it can happen to anyone, for any number of reasons. Just as homelessness is not caused by one thing – there is not a single solution that will fix all of the issues that have led to people being homeless in Reading. Also, there are many types of homelessness – not just the rough sleeping that you see in Reading town centre - sofa surfing, staying in emergency accommodation such as B&Bs or living in squats. Seek help as soon as you can. Here we dispel some common myths about homelessness, and provide information about what to do when someone is rough sleeping or begging. https://lnkd.in/eJWX_bNv #homeless #support #WeCanHelp #DropIn #charity #RdgUK

As we get back into the swing of things after the festive period, government figures show that the number of people experiencing homelessness has risen significantly since 2022. It’s estimated that almost an additional 40,000 people spent Christmas without a home in 2023 - a 14% increase from 2022. Shelter has described the homelessness crisis as being out of control, and we agree. Can you help us to make a difference? #support #charity #homelessnesscrisis

Homelessness has been on the rise for years, with various charities advocating to make changes to the systems that are meant to help them. However, amongst these conversations, it is thought that youth homelessness is often forgotten as being a large part of the general statistics. Recent research from Centrepoint has shown that the number of young people who are either homeless or soon to be has risen from previous years, equating to around 372 people contacting the council for help each day. This is why over 100 charities are calling on the government to implement a national strategy to fight youth homelessness. This strategy comprises three main areas of action; prevention, finances, and housing. It also lays out evidence-based solutions that the government can adopt to tackle the crisis. https://buff.ly/4bcZHuv #youthhomelessness #generalelection #homelessness #centrepoint #housing

The issue of homelessness is a crisis that affects countless individuals and families worldwide. It is a tragic reality that is often overlooked, but the impact it has on those affected is immeasurable. This. Wondering how your organization can model a commitment to reconciliation in your work? Read this example.
In 2023, we gathered the community in the Tri-Cities for a forum to identify the gaps in affordable housing, revealing a major concern with homelessness. A significant finding was the increasing number of unhoused individuals, now at 160 and rising, with a third being Indigenous. We didn’t just analyze the data – we took immediate action. Securing a $25,000 grant for a homelessness and housing feasibility study, we formed an outreach team guided by the Indigenous principle of "all my relations," the understanding that we are all interconnected and share a responsibility to care for one another. With an Indigenous-led board of directors, we allocated the remaining funds to support our unhoused friends, resulting in our dedicated team finding affordable housing solutions for six previously unhoused neighbors. To continue funding this crucial work, we launched a second thrift store, Thrift & Fund, right in the heart of the Tri-Cities. Our goal is to generate revenue from this store to reinvest in the community and support our unhoused neighbors. Join us at Thrift & Fund to shop like a legend and donate like a hero. Your support helps us co-create a compassionate, caring community where we work together instead of against each other. Let’s stand together for each other and all our relations. We're open every day. #community #tricities #strongertogether

ANNOUNCING Save Nicholson Street Village Charity Fundraiser Developers are trying to build a 6 storey apartment block in the heart of Nicholson Street Village, at 786-794 Nicholson Street Village (Cnr Nicholson Street), the current site of the Car Wash. Yarra City Council have refused to approve the plans because of pressure from wealthy homeowners who want to block sensible, medium-density housing in their area, and limit opportunities for less well-off people to live in their area. This is unacceptable. Developments like this add to housing stock, and provide homes for people where they want to live. Blocking new housing supply increases homelessness. And homelessness is, after all, a housing problem. That's why, in response to NIMBY efforts to block this housing project, YIMBY Melbourne is fundraising for Launch Housing. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to Launch Housing's Parachute Fund, which provides rapid financial assistance to those who need support to remain out of homelessness. If we raise the same goal as the NIMBYs ($35,000), we will be able to support up to 35 individuals and families at risk of falling into homelessness. Every donation counts. https://lnkd.in/ddbXR_W3

While the idea of spending a night outdoors in the cold might not sound appealing at first, the cause behind it fuels our motivation. Homelessness is a critical issue that affects countless people in our community, and I am proud to be a part of our company’s effort that aims to take a stand against homelessness. The statistics around homelessness are staggering. With over 4,000 children experiencing homelessness, it's clear we need to take action. That’s why I think it is important to take part in my workplace sleep out as part of Focus Ireland’s Shine A Light, proudly supported by Bord Gáis Energy. By participating in this event, we hope to inspire others to get involved to raise funds to support vital homeless services. Please show your support by donating to our fundraising page: every contribution, big or small, gets us closer to creating a future where everyone has a safe place to call home. On any given night, there are nearly 4,000 people experiencing homelessness and housing instability in Dallas and Collin counties. And those are just the people that have been accounted for. Maybe they are living on the streets, or in a shelter, but countless people are living in hotel rooms, sleeping on someone's couch, or living in their car too. Housing is a spectrum, and there are real people at every point of that spectrum who need assistance. Housing Connector has discovered a pragmatic solution to a big problem. We increase access to housing for folks affected by housing screening barriers by partnering with properties for a reduction in criteria. This way, more people can apply for and be approved for units that are sitting vacant. With your support, we can continue to help individuals and families find a place to call home. 2024 is a special year for Doorway – it’s 20 years since we first opened our doors in Chippenham in support of people experiencing homelessness. Anniversaries tend to lead to a bit of reflection: How was it back then? What do we do now that we didn’t do then? What’s changed? One thing that has changed is our name - in our earliest iteration we were the North Wilts Homelessness Project, and it wasn't until 2010 that we registered as an independent charity, Doorway Wiltshire. However, an anniversary is also a good opportunity to look at what has stayed the same. What has noticeably stayed the same is the set of values we operate by. We still do not judge, we still treat everyone as equals, and we still act from a base of dignity and respect. The individual nature of our support has also remained a vital part of what we do; Doorway has always listened to a person’s story and asked them what needs to happen to enable them to move on from homelessness. This piece recorded for BBC Wiltshire Radio just before Christmas says it all – one of our guests describes his recovery from rough sleeping, and talks of Doorway as ‘a community of people helping themselves and helping each other’. Although our service has expanded and the number of people experiencing homelessness in Wiltshire has increased over the years it’s reassuring to know that some things will never change. https://lnkd.in/eCXm46fZ
