𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐛? Developments are generally perceived to be negative and extractive. But when introducing something new to a community, both the developer team and community need to think beyond the site, looking at a wider suburb-level context and approaching it from the lens of repair. - What has been damaged or lost? - What can be improved in the wider area? - What role will this development play in the larger community? Addressing these questions indicates a much-wider ambition that shifts the dial from distrust to trust in the development team. With this approach, negotiations with Council and neighbours can take on a more positive collaborative approach. Research has shown that resident communities who feel connected to their suburbs report better wellbeing. By ensuring that developmental interventions (including architecture) support the community, we can help the community repair and strengthen their connection to their suburb, thereby supporting overall wellbeing. Prioritizing good outcomes, a flourishing neighborhood and community. Both inside and out. “Why residents must, must, must have a say in the design of their communities Co-design is a process in which users are treated as equal collaborators in the design process – breaking down that historical hierarchy between architect/designer, and the public With Labour’s promise to deliver the biggest boost to affordable housing for a generation if elected, there needs to be a renewed focus on how we can design affordable housing and deliver it inclusively The concern is that swathes of new houses could be designed and built by a coalition of funders, developers, local authorities and architects with little-to-no look in from future tenants, and not enough consideration being given to how this new housing could lead to larger benefits for local communities” #ukhousing

Why do people buy a grapefruit from Borough Market rather than their local store? How do we craft joyful, authentic architecture that creates experiences and serves people, place and community? In this episode of Building Insights, Trevor Morriss talks to James Parker about our approach to masterplanning large complex schemes and designing experiential spaces that inspire. He reflects on his involvement in transforming London districts, a city he describes as "the DNA of who I am as a person." Trevor shares his insights on: - Community engagement: Lessons from the exemplary community consultation process at OlympiaUK and a recent planning meeting that brought into question the way the housing crisis is being tackled - Heritage: Adopting a conservation, rather than preservation, approach to give historic buildings a modern lease of life - Improvement vs. gentrification: Understanding the nuances between enhancing an area and gentrifying it - Joyful yet measured design: The thoughtful integration of elements needed to ensure our building stock is not all ‘vanilla’, but also features ‘raspberry ripple’ moments Don’t miss this insightful conversation on the transformative power of architecture with the right approach and community involvement! What we all could learn from architects and designers: "better use of housing land, develop at double densities, and replace car dominance with child-centred, convivial neighbourhoods" and use existing assets to develop communities through a strong sense of place. https://lnkd.in/gCPiuwWu

More homes is what we urgently need. Well designed, well located homes, to cater for the needs of diverse household types. We all know that this is an imperative, we know it is urgent, and we know that each of us probably already have part of the solution. Putting our collective heads together is critical if we are to effect important and lasting change. Thankyou to Hassell for facilitating these important conversations. #hasselstudio #perthhousing #housingcrisis #affordablehousing #socialhousing #communityhousing #buildtorent #rentalhousing #buildthefuture #innercityhousing #apartmentdesign #perthplanning #perthdesign #architecture #perthproperty #perthrealestate #urbanplanning #urbandesign #collaboration #itstime https://lnkd.in/g38WdYDS

A new year presents exciting opportunities for the residential sector. It's an opportunity to address housing affordability and supply while putting people and community building at the forefront of design decisions. Plus Director, Sumedh Kataria, joined a team of industry experts to provide commentary on the 2024 residential outlook. “The industry must shift away from the short-term, quick-profit, build-to-sell model. Greater consideration must be given to growing the alternative housing market and investment models, such as the build-to-rent and affordable housing." 🔗 Read The Urban Developer article here: https://bit.ly/4aUS7ED #PlusArchitecture #AustralianArchitecture #ResidentialDesign #BuildToRent #AffordableHousing

One of the books in our month-long Future of Housing focus, is Walter Segal: Self-Built Architect, by Alice Grahame 🌱 Grahame and John McKean with an introduction by Kevin McCloud ~ NOW 50% OFF at www.lundhumphries.com! This book is a study of the architect Walter Segal (1907-1985) – his background, influences, thoughts, writings, his unique approach to architectural practice (and his built work) – as well as his enduring impact on architecture and attitudes to housing across the world… The timber-frame form known world-wide today as ‘the Segal system’, can be used by people to build their own houses. Indeed, at the time of Segal’s death, in 1985, two areas of self-built public authority social housing in London were being constructed - housing which, nearly half a century later, remains as unique and highly desirable neighbourhoods. Segal’s method provides the possibility of making, and then living within, communities whose places are constructed with a flexible, easily assembled, planet-friendly timber-frame building system for today and tomorrow. In practice now: Rural Urban Synthesis Society (RUSS)'s Church Grove in south-east London, a Segal-inspired housing scheme, has just been completed. https://lnkd.in/eMzXd_nn

Hostile architecture impacts the most vulnerable members of our society, particularly the homeless, by intentionally excluding them from public spaces. By shedding light on this practice, I hope to spark a conversation about the ethical implications of such designs and encourage more inclusive and compassionate approaches to urban planning. Our cities should be spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued, and it’s crucial to advocate for designs that reflect these principles. I invite readers to share their thoughts and perspectives on this. #hostilearchitecture #urbanredevelopment #userexperience
