Interim CEO at Koivunen Oy (Koivunen, Fixus, Mekonomen) ♦️ HHJ ♦️ Board, Advisory ♦️ Growth, Transformation, Strategy, Leadership, Execution, Digital & AI
🚗 A Crash Course in the Automotive Industry continues – From EV Markets to Automechanika! 🚗 My deep dive into the automotive world just keeps getting more interesting! Last week, I had the chance to attend Automechanika Frankfurt, a massive event that brought together 4,200 exhibitors from 80 countries, welcoming international visitors from across the automotive aftermarket—workshops, industry professionals, and trade experts. 🌍🔧 Fun fact: Nearly 900 visitors from Finland attended—8% more than in 2022. It’s clear the aftermarket is thriving, and personal connections remain vital in this industry. Some key takeaways from the event (besides the impressive amount of spare parts): 📊 Data, Analytics & Platforms: While data and systems have become central in many industries, this event seemed very product-focused. There’s still plenty of room for growth in how data and digital platforms are used in the automotive aftermarket. 🚘 Chinese Cars: Even though it was a spare parts fair, Chinese EV manufacturers were highly visible, with nearly a whole hall dedicated to their future driven vehicles. 🎤 Keynotes & Industry Leaders: While there was a strong focus on products, I would have loved to hear more about the future of the industry, especially around key topics like sustainability. Given its growing importance, it could be worth dedicating an entire keynote stage to sustainability in the coming years, as the automotive sector shifts towards greener practices. 🏭 Scale: The sheer volume of products and manufacturers was staggering—12 massive halls packed with spare parts. 🍻 After Hours: And, of course, no German event would be complete without Brezels and beer! The evenings were just as full of energy and connection as the day’s events. I’m excited to continue this journey in such a dynamic and evolving field. I’m also proud to work at MEKO, where we aim to be leaders in the industry in many fronts, #sustainability being one of our top priorities. 💼🌟 #automotiveindustry #EVmarket #Automechanika #spareparts #aftermarket #sustainability #networking

One thing I find important and enjoyable is the regular site visits within the group. There are developments in all five of MEKO's business areas and eight markets, which is engaging to see firsthand. This time around, I visited Warsaw and Krakow in Poland, and I had the great company of MEKO's board members Dominick Zarcone, Helena Skåntorp, Eivor Andersson, Magnus Håkansson and Kenny Brack Bräck and MEKO’s Director of Communications Anders Oxelström. Our days were well spent with a warm welcome from INTER-TEAM Sp. z o.o., and our newest acquisition ELIT Polska. Poland's automotive aftermarket industry holds strong potential due to its skilled workforce, growing vehicle population, competitive labor costs, and strategic position in Europe. With increasing demand for car parts, maintenance, and services, Poland is a key center for distributing automotive parts and products within supply chain. As many countries, Poland is adapting to the electric wave. Even though the number of electric cars on the road isn’t as high as in the Nordic countries, Poland is following the EV trend. By leveraging MEKO’s Nordic expertise in EVs, we aim to lead the way in adapting to the ongoing electric transformation of the automotive industry. This aim also includes positioning ourselves as a key player in the future of sustainable transportation in Poland. Thank you, Piotr Zyśk, and Jaroslaw Chojczak with colleagues, for the site visits and the insights on the automotive aftermarket development in the Polish market. Photo is taken in Elit Polska’s central warehouse in Krakow, Poland. The BM Parts team is attending one of the most anticipated industry events of the year: Automechanika 2024 in Frankfurt. It’s an invaluable opportunity to connect with our partners, explore the latest innovations, and engage with the trendsetters shaping the future of our industry. We value every customer and are actively working to address these challenges through strategic investments, operational improvements, and a focus on your satisfaction. By remaining flexible and adapting to market changes, we are confident in our ability to maintain our leadership position and grow successfully in an increasingly competitive and wartime environment. The last treasure of the automotive industry... Today, Automechanika Frankfurt – the world's largest trade fair for the automotive aftermarket – is opening its doors and I am looking forward to many new insights on this highly important market segment. While the whole auto industry is under massive pressure, the aftermarket continues to offer very healthy margins and a stable stream of revenues in turbulent times. Therefore, it is no surprise that many market participants (OEMs as well as suppliers and independent aftermarket players) are doubling down on this important business segment. Unlike the new car business that is gradually moving from combustion engines to EVs, the aftermarket for the existing car park will continue to be skewed towards conventional cars for decades to come - offering profit potential for the established carmakers and suppliers. The comprehensive service network coverage of established OEMs is also a key instrument to fend off Chinese car manufacturers in Europe who are still weak on this important element of the value chain. Nonetheless, there are also numerous challenges for the aftermarket: the low new car sales of the past few years as well as the increasing electrification have a negative impact on the business potential while lack of skilled workshop technicians represents a massive growth barrier for many players. Supply chain disruptions and cost inflation have the same negative effects on the business that they have for the overall industry. Irrespective of these challenges, the aftermarket continues to be the last treasure of the automotive industry – preserving and growing the market position will be a strategic imperative for future success in the industry. We at Oliver Wyman are proud to help many of our clients on this journey.
