#Sustainable small holder #poultry #farming. Are you still throwing your plastic bottles away? Here is a good way to repurpose them by using them to make poultry feeders and drinkers. This particular feeders and drinkers are my favorite because they are lifted and suspended slightly above the ground which ensures that mice and other rodents are kept at bay and cannot access the poultry feed and water. It also ensures that your poultry feed and the water does not mix with dirt and avoids spillage as the chicken will not step on the drinkers and feeders. I spoke to the Express this week about the impact of unprecedented wet weather on farms across the country. As is the rule when this happens, we’re now experiencing fantastic drying conditions and farmers are facing to plant across, but the fundamentals remain that huge areas of winter crops are written off, many surviving crops are of poor quality, many late-drilled cereals will struggle to perform and much land (as at The GWCT Allerton Project) will be placed into summer fallow. This will all have knock-on impacts for the livestock sector, who are also struggling with turnout and grass growth. Fundamental questions have to be posed about the resilience of our farming systems in the face of extreme weather, as well as our ability to deliver on our environmental responsibilities, as well as food production. https://lnkd.in/eTTZcr_h

Commercial Broiler Management   More than 30 billion broiler chicks are produced worldwide on an annual basis. Fifteen billion of these are produced in the Americas. Due to the poultry industry's tendency towards more intensive production practices and increased automation, the tender loving care once afforded to chickens in grow-out has been replaced with a mass production mentality. As a result, newly hatched chicks are often subjected to numerous stressors in the first 24 hours after hatching. These adverse effects during the critical early hours following hatch can result in an increased percentage of early mortality. These early stressors also influence final performance, resulting in declines in final body weights, increases in feed conversions and cost per pound of meat produced. Farm personal must understand that they have become the "adoptive parents" of these chicks.
