Flughafen Wien - Vienna Airport (Austria) has been given a deadline until 2030 to complete the construction of its third runway, as ruled by the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG). The decision comes after the airport had requested a 9.5-year extension until 2033, citing uncertainties in air traffic caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The project involved rebuilding the entire runway, installing new drainage, replacing signs, and implementing an energy-efficient LED lighting system. 🚧 The construction was a complex challenge as the runway needed to remain operational during the project. Security measures and coordination with local authorities were crucial to ensuring the safety of the construction site. 🔄 Robust contingency plans were in place to address unexpected issues, including equipment breakdowns. The project required meticulous planning and flawless communication. ✈️ The airport's duty manager closely monitored the project to ensure the runway reopened on schedule each morning, with no materials left behind. Thorough inspections were conducted to guarantee compliance. 🌱 To minimize soil transportation, non-polluted soil from the project was repurposed locally to create an optimal biotope, promoting sustainability. 🌟 The project's success and innovative approach have made it a reference project for other airports. It showcased the importance of teamwork and planning in such complex endeavors.

Sydney’s aviation demand is expected to double over coming decades. To bolster capacity, a new greenfield airport was proposed approximately 50km from Sydney’s central business district in the rapidly developing western region and third largest economy in Australia.   On opening, Western Sydney International Airport will be able to cater for 10 million passengers per year and by the 2060s, it will be Sydney’s primary airport handling more than 80 million passengers per year.    WT has been delivering a decade of support to Western Sydney International Airport through planning, design, and delivery, from cost management and commercial advisory through to facilities management.
