How do you support the maritime industry while balancing the needs of the environment and surrounding community? In Cleveland, we’re working on the Cleveland Harbor Eastern Embayment Resilience Strategy (CHEERS) which seeks to do just that by generating waterfront access and economic growth through coastal resilience, featuring a range of sustainable solutions along the shoreline of Lake Erie. For over 70 years, there has been limited access to the water’s edge due to a transportation corridor and vertical seawalls. A new park will create a connection point to the water while simultaneously providing coastal protection, natural habitat, and recreational opportunities for the community. The CHEERS project — spearheaded by the Port of Cleveland and Cleveland Metroparks — is expansive, imaginative, and creative in its approach, not just seeking to preserve the maritime economy, mitigate hazards, and foster environmental justice, but also envisions a more holistic and fulfilling existence for the surrounding people and wildlife. The sustainable waterfront development that has emerged over the last 35 years of our existence thanks to a cleaned-up waterway has transformed Buffalo into a vibrant, activated waterfront city with a transformative Rust to Blue™ economy. Much like our community, our restoration and protection work has built resiliency into our waterways and shorelines, allowing that economic growth to flourish. But new threats loom on the horizon, and we have all experienced the impacts of extreme weather on our waterways, our shorelines and our homes and businesses. Now more than ever, we need your support to continue to meet these new challenges and build resiliency for our waterways and community. Just like when our organization began 35 years ago, we are once again in a watershed moment in WNY. The community came together back then to revive a dead river and bring a city back to life. Will you join us today to build the resiliency we need to meet the challenges facing us over the next 35 years? https://lnkd.in/gi6VKN4M
