Michael Baker International was chosen by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to lead a full-service bridge replacement project of the US 51 Bridge. The purpose of the project is to improve cross-river mobility between Wickliffe, Kentucky, and Cairo, Illinois, by addressing the safety and reliability issues caused by the narrow lane widths, lack of shoulders, and tight curve of the existing bridge and its approaches. The 86-year-old structure carries US 51, US 60, and US 62 over the Ohio River. The bridge is one of just four highway crossings of the Ohio River between Kentucky and Illinois, making it a vital crossing to the region. The project is about to begin a geotechnical investigation to determine the existing conditions and assess the potential impacts on the design of the bridge. This work includes using the pictured lift boat, traveling under the I-55 Bridge en route through Memphis to its final destination, to drill and test soil samples. Drilling depths will approach 400 feet below the mud line of the river. Some of the deeper borings will require four to five days to complete. The drilling work will occur 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the work is complete. #ProjectUpdate #BridgeSafety #Infrustructure

I suppose everyone has their own "favorite" aspects of their job. Mine is construction involving heavy equipment. Always so interesting to watch the site evolve. Take this QuikTrip job being constructed by Ben F. Blanton Construction, Inc. in Maryland Heights, MO for example. First, there was the demolition of the old building, followed by the debris clean-up. Second, a lot of dirt had to be moved, the site cut to grade, and preparing the site for gravel to be put down and compacted. Before long, my absolute favorite aspect of fuel station construction will be starting (third), digging the fuel tank pits followed by swinging the tanks and installing them into the pits. #construction #generalcontracting #commercialconstruction #conveniencestores

Here's a step-by-step of what is going on behind the scenes for the construction of the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline (FGP) - and it's quite a process. 1️⃣ The Right of Way (ROW) is surveyed and investigated. Cultural Heritage Monitors conduct a ‘walk through’ to identify artifacts. 2️⃣ All vegetation is removed from the ROW. 3️⃣ The ROW is cleared of all obstructions and bulldozed to prepare a flat construction platform. Topsoil is reserved for reinstatement later. 4️⃣ A survey is conducted to determine the centreline and the centreline is pegged. 5️⃣ Pipes are ‘strung’ end-to-end along the ROW next to where the trench will be dug. 6️⃣ A trench is excavated using specialist heavy earthmoving machinery. Trenchless methods, such as drilling or boring, are used where the conditions do not suit the use of an open trench, such as waterways, rail, and some roads. 7️⃣ The pipe is laid into the trench using specialised heavy machinery. 8️⃣ The trench is backfilled using soil maintained from step 3. 9️⃣ Specialised equipment is then used to test the pipeline’s pressure – called hydrotesting to expose and rectify any operational defects. 🔟 All areas affected by construction are reinstated to pre-construction conditions as far as practicable. THE Exposed Pipeline Remediation Experts Little Mulberry Creek Case Study – In our latest case study, discover how Submar protected a 24-inch natural gas pipeline that was exposed for 10 feet due to headcutting at Little Mulberry Creek in Chilton County, Alabama. The site was dewatered using sandbag dams and pumps. Both banks and the streambed were graded, and a geotextile material was placed on top of the grade. A Submar articulating concrete mat system was installed from high bank to high bank to armor the pipeline. All edges of the mat system were toed into anchor and flank trenches that were backfilled with existing material and rip rap. A subgrade rock grade control was installed downstream of the mat system to prevent headcutting. Geotextile and rock were installed on the banks for bank paving. Submar offers comprehensive turnkey solutions for onshore and offshore pipeline protection, erosion control, and streambank stabilization for the pipeline industry. Our services include site inspection and surveying, environmentally conscious engineered designs, environmental permitting and regulatory compliance, product design and manufacturing, project management and construction, and post-construction monitoring. Sea defenses and piers are vital infrastructure for the UK cost. Less so piers but where are you going to get your chips stolen by seagulls. These concrete structures suffer a lot of abuse from the sea and the salt that splash against them leading to degradation of the structure. They are built extremely well to survive but regular maintenance is key to keeping the concrete strong. Their supports and sub base are also getting washed out with every wave and large voids can form where they can't be seen. That's where Trace Structural Investigations can support. We undertake comprehensive assessments of coastal structures to confirm their construction (never as it should be) then determine their condition and the presence of defects, such as voiding (that is what the GPR is doing in the video). Using the InspecTerra Inc. iCAMM, along side #GPR and other systems, means that we can determine the level of corrosion on in the bars. This corrosion assessment is key to planning the next steps of maintenance. Don't wait for a structural failure to happen. Before any excavation begins, STRATA engineers meticulously mark our test pit explorations. Following this, we promptly contact Idaho Digline to identify and mark any public utilities on site. Whether the excavations are borings, test pits, or rock probes, safeguarding against accidental strikes on public utilities is paramount to prevent service disruptions and injuries. #GeotechnicalEngineering #ExcavationSafety #ConstructionSafety #STRATA #EngineeringExcellence

Enbridge has selected the contractors who are set to build a 4-mile tunnel to house a new segment of the Line 5 oil pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac. The joint venture, Mackinac Straits Partners, comprised of Barnard and Civil & Building North America, has been chosen for the project. The tunnel will replace dual oil pipelines running underwater between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. The cost of the contract has not been disclosed yet, with the overall project initially estimated at $500 million, expected to rise due to inflation and delays. The 645-mile Line 5 pipeline is part of Enbridge's Lakehead System, stretching from Superior, Wisconsin, to Sarnia, Canada. Federal approval is required for the Michigan tunnel project to proceed, involving building in U.S. navigable waters. Following a 2010 accident resulting in a significant oil spill, the Line 5 project aims to address potential ecological and economic risks associated with the pipeline. Despite permits from Michigan, final approvals from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are pending, with a decision expected by early 2026. Enbridge and environmental activists have expressed frustration over the ongoing delays in commencing construction. #Construction #Pipeline5 #ConstructionJobs #Enbridge
