Long-term water security will soon be a reality with 1500 cubic metres of concrete being poured to create the base for one of the two reservoirs at Aldoga, 20km north-west of Gladstone. These reservoirs will become part of the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline (FGP). This important work required more than 100 truckloads of concrete, two local batching plants and 12 local workers, all coordinated by Principal contractor McConnell Dowell BMD Group Joint Venture (MBJV). Combined, the two reservoirs will have the capacity to store 100 mega litres of water – equal to 20 Olympic sized swimming pools! To date, we have spent more than $114 million within the Gladstone and Rockhampton region, and a further $149 million spent within Queensland. Check out our timelapse video of the pour below. Hundreds of safety glasses from the #FitzroyToGladstonePipline will be saved from landfill thanks to MBJV who are taking part in a recycling initiative to give this personal protective equipment (PPE) a second life. PPE, such as safety glasses, are an unavoidable waste for many construction projects - especially ones on the scale of the FGP. MBJV started the recycling initiative for the FGP with a goal to recycle up to 100 pairs of safety glasses. According to Australian regulations, safety glasses have a shelf life of two years but depending on the workplace environment and intensity and frequency of use, the date of expiry could be as little as three months. Most safety glasses are made out of a polycarbonate material, which cannot be disposed of in the yellow top recycling bins in Australia. This means they tend to end up in landfill. Polycarbonate is an extremely durable plastic, and it takes a long time to break down in landfill but is a high-quality material when recycled or repurposed. This means, once recycled it can be used in a range of construction materials including roofing materials, construction of bus shelters, hard hats and even new eyewear. #FitzroyToGladstonePipeline #CentralQueensland #WaterSecurity #Community #Sustainability #ISC

At GAWB, we always appreciate a visit! Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting the Stanwell Corporation Limited's stakeholder engagement team. While in Gladstone for a team-building day, they toured our Aquaculture Gladstone interpretive display and the Awoonga Dam wall. We wrapped up the visit with morning tea at Lake Awoonga, where they engaged with our executive leadership team. It was a fantastic opportunity to highlight the positive impact our facilities and services have on Central Queensland. Thank you for visiting! #GAWB #GladstoneAreaWaterBoard #LakeAwoonga #AquacultureGladstone #CentralQueensland

Meet Trev, Senior Land Management Officer at Gladstone Area Water Board. Trev began his career with GAWB five years ago, completing a Conservation and Land Management traineeship within our Grounds and Catchment team, before transitioning into land management earlier this year. Seeking a career change, Trev’s traineeship allowed him to grow and deepen his knowledge in a field he is truly passionate about – nature. From pest management, operating machinery and conducting property inspections, to walking creek lines to inspect erosion and treat weeds, every day brings something new. The knowledge and experience gained during his traineeship, combined with his personal drive and passion, means Trev gets to do what he loves every day – monitoring, protecting and enhancing our region’s natural resources on behalf of GAWB. If you’re looking for variety, feel passionate about nature, enjoy working outdoors and want to expand your knowledge while earning an income, then our Land Management or Horticulture Traineeship could be for you. Caring for each other is one of GAWB’s core values – it’s part of who we are and the way we work. So today, on R U OK? Day, we’re sharing a cuppa and taking some time to check in with each other. When was the last time you asked your friends, family and colleagues, are you okay? While R U OK? Day reminds us of what matters, don’t wait until the second Thursday in September to reach out to the people in your world. Ask the question any day. Learn more about R U OK? We’re pleased to announce the Queensland Government has appointed Councillor (Cr) Kahn Goodluck as a Director to the Board of Gladstone Area Water Board, replacing outgoing Director, Mr Peter Masters. As a current councillor with Gladstone Regional Council, Cr Goodluck brings a wealth of experience regarding the local community and the wider Gladstone region. Cr Goodluck joins the Board at a time when significant projects such as the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline are set to double our asset base and provide water security for the region. We look forward to working with him for the continued benefit of our region. We also thank Mr Masters for his years of service to the board. His knowledge and expertise have been integral to the maturity and growth of our organisation. Meet Denisha, one of our incredible trainees working on the Fitzroy to Gladstone Pipeline (FGP). Denisha, who is 21 years old, is currently completing her Certificate II in Civil Construction – Labouring. Denisha wanted to give civil construction a go so she could experience a broad range of construction activities and see what she enjoys the most. She is eager to learn as much as possible during her traineeship so she can one day become a supervisor. Denisha has also spent the last three years coaching the Ghungalu Bees netball team, a local team for Indigenous girls, which endeavour to inspire participation in sport and provide opportunities for success. We are very proud to have such a motivated young woman as part of our FGP team and we can’t wait to see her excel in her career in construction! #FitzroyToGladstonePipeline #CentralQueensland #WaterSecurity #Trainees #FirstNationAustralians

Meet hoppy Rocky residents Aisla and Kevin! These Alton Downs residents are a stone’s throw from the #FitzroyToGladstonePipline (FGP) Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The couple with the frog-tastic mailbox have recently had their driveway reinstated as part of the FGP – they even got some extra gravel! Our Principal Contractor MBJV regularly checks in with residents like Aisla and Kevin about progress and updates on the FGP. We love hearing how helpful our updates have been to residents like Aisla and Kevin. The WTP will treat, store and pump water from the Fitzroy River along the pipeline to two new 50ML reservoirs being constructed in Aldoga – approximately 20km from Gladstone. #FitzroyToGladstonePipeline #CentralQueensland #WaterSecurity #Community
