Yesterday my car broke down on the way to work!
I got 6 different Mechanics to inspect it, quote the job and repair it at the same time! Then the one who fixed it first was the only one who got paid.
No. That never happened. That would be ludicrous. In fact, if I told Mechanics what my plan was to fix my car, none of them would deign to participate. Well you probably know where I’m going with this.
The practice of farming out job vacancies to more than two agencies at the same time is something I come across constantly. And it rarely works in your favour.
Getting recruitment partners to buy into your role when they know it’s going to be a low chance of success is difficult. Getting them to actually fill the role within the designated time frame and the skill expectation, when each is working with 20% of the puzzle, is almost impossible.
“I don’t have time for a proper job brief, I’m already working with 5 other agencies. Just use the JD.”
You may think you’re saving precious time, and you’re probably genuinely very busy with internal work. But you’ll be spending more time taking calls and fielding emails from a plethora of agencies, trying to remember which recruiter sent which candidate that you’ll waste far more time in the long run.
You may think you’re getting a group of fierce recruitment sharks who will battle each other to the pinnacle of the food chain until the victor emerges. In reality, you’re probably getting a bunch of puppies that lose interest and get distracted at the same time.
If you must work with multiple agencies, make it two maximum. At least that’s manageable (although exclusive is more likely to get you better results). And if that means, I’m the third Recruiter to the party and I have to bow-out, no problems.
I know I won’t be able to give you proper value for money if you don’t have the time for a meeting or regular phone calls. I’d much rather circle back in a few months’ time to see how it went. When you’re ready to work with me, I’ll be ready to work with you.
PS – Huge shout out to the incredible businesses I’ve partnered with in the past and present who have given me the time to get to know your business and help you find the right people!
