Automotive Reflections: 1985 Porsche B32. Probably the most valuable version of VW T3 van, the B32 was originally conceived as a support vehicle for the factory 959 rally cars during the Paris-Dakar campaign. Based on the Volkswagen T3 Caravelle, power came from a Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2L flat-six putting out 231hp which supposedly made the van capable of doing 0-62mph in 8 secs onto a top speed of 115mph. It is believed that only 15 examples were built including prototypes. And yes, they have Porsche VIN and hence identified as Porsches. This particular Perlmutter Metallic example was specially made for the then CEO of Porsche AG Peter W. Schutz (1981–1987) and was listed for sale by Porsche Center Gelderland for nearly $375k USD.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Volkswagen made the decision to acquire Bugatti and embark on a groundbreaking project that would redefine the automotive industry. They aimed to create a car with 1000 horsepower and a top speed of 250 miles per hour, a feat that had never been achieved before. To put this achievement into perspective, during the same era, other renowned supercar manufacturers were producing remarkable vehicles, such as the Ferrari Enzo, Mercedes McLaren SLR, and Porsche Carrera GT. While these cars boasted impressive power outputs of around 600-650 horsepower, they fell far short of Bugatti's 1000-horsepower target. They devised a unique solution by combining two V8 engines to create a quad-turbocharged W16 engine. Initially, this engine fell slightly short of the 1000-horsepower mark, so Bugatti engineers added four turbochargers to create an eight-liter quad-turbocharged W16, finally achieving the desired 1000 horsepower. However, generating 1000 horsepower also generates an enormous amount of heat. Unlike a typical car with one radiator, the Veyron is equipped with ten radiators to keep the engine cool. With a top speed of 253 miles per hour, the Veyron can drain its 100-liter fuel tank in just 12 minutes. It inhales an astounding 47,000 liters of air per minute, equivalent to what an average person breathes in over four days. The massive air intakes on the roof and sides channel air into the colossal engine to support its incredible performance.
