Actuaries, the new rock stars of our industry + 3 actuarial skills all young insurance pros should learn… It’s overplayed. But, I still love when business people are described as rock stars. Last week I pitched an actuary. In charge of the insurance purchase for a prospect. A global (re)insurance company. Normally our buyer is a CFO or GC. Or someone from those teams. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense though. Who typically possesses the three skills that impact the key major risks of any insurance company? 1. Precise math 2. Risk assessment 3. Business acumen Actuaries! → Actuaries can optimize market positioning through their deep understanding of risk. (our underwriters soak this up) → Precise risk assessment can dial in the right insurance limits for a financial lines or cyber program. (The two main risk categories) → Actuary work provides strategic skills crucial in the increasing data-driven environments of the future. (should be self explanatory) I used to counsel young people… …to go and work in claims. Now it might be to go and try and work for the actuaries! Will they be the future superstars? Matthew shared a detailed overview of career opportunities within insurance, drawing from his personal journey from graduate entry to his current role as a qualified Actuary specializing in Marine, Energy, and Specialty insurance at Hiscox. 🌟Networking with Deloitte ⭐️ To end the day, I attended a really insightful networking session hosted by Deloitte, engaging with Kiran Sandhu,Lyka Q., and Raj Digva. It was a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable industry insights and connect with experienced professionals. I am delighted to share the Ph.D. thesis I recently defended. A sincere word of gratitude to my supervisor Nino Savelli for his precious support and help during these three years. I hope you will find the thesis interesting and useful. Abstract Nowadays, all EU insurance companies are requested by Solvency II to calculate capital requirements to prevent the risk of insolvency. This can be achieved either in accordance with the Standard Formula or using a full or partial Internal Model. An Internal Model is based on a market-consistent valuation of balance sheet items at a one-year time span, where a real-world probabilistic structure is used for the first projection year. In this thesis, we examine the main risks of a non-life insurer, i.e. the non-life underwriting risk and market risk, and their interactions, focusing on the non-life premium and reserve risk, equity risk, property risk, and interest rate risk. Consequently, we quantify the risk profile either with the Standard Formula or using a partial Internal Model. This analysis is performed using some reference stochastic models in the practical insurance business, i.e. the Collective Risk Model for non-life premium risk, the Re-Reserving Model for non-life reserve risk, the Geometric Brownian Motion for equity and property risk, and a real-world version of the G2++ Model for interest rate risk. In this thesis, we also consider a stochastic model for inflation, explicitly affecting the non-life underwriting items. We extend a real-world version of the Jarrow-Yildirim model, assuming that both the nominal rate and real rate evolve according to a two-factor process. It is indeed quite common that a two-factor model is preferred in order to admit some correlations between different rates. Finally, we illustrate a case study and several analyses on a multi-line insurance company in order to see how the risk drivers behave in both a stand-alone and an aggregate framework, and we calibrate the parameters on current and real market data. https://lnkd.in/dCjZZvWu

The Casualty Actuarial Society Election voting process has officially begun! Since embarking on this journey as a candidate for the CAS Board, I've dedicated myself to understanding the needs and concerns of our members. I've interviewed and conversed with more than a dozen members and candidates at various stages of their careers, all to better represent our current and future members. There are two priorities that I would like to tackle as a Board Member: 1. Building Skills for the Future: The CAS should continue to expand our research and education efforts on technical analytics so that Actuaries continue to be sought-after experts in solving technical challenges. Furthermore, the CAS should bolster our education resources and content on how Actuaries can collaborate with other business functions, such as Claims or Underwriting, to drive broader strategic business decisions. 2. Optimizing Candidate Experience: This year, all three Ask the Candidates questions were related to exams and education for candidates. Given the unfortunate outcome of the May 1 exam sitting, this result is fully warranted. I am deeply committed to driving meaningful change on this front, and I want to ensure that our future members are fully supported and set up for success as they continue to pursue their membership with the CAS.
